"DIY Laptop Repairs"
Joe Citarella - 5/15/08

Laptops are among the hardest PCs to repair, mainly due to the lack of standards as to parts, etc. In addition, parts are crammed into very small footprints, making it a challenge to open them up while keeping track of a bevy of small screws. Sending a laptop in for repairs turns out to be an expensive exercise as labor and parts costs are "fully priced".

Fortunately for some laptops there are service manuals available on the manufacturers' websites - this is the first place to look. However, many of these guides are limited to the most common and easy to handle topics, such as hard drive replacement and adding memory.

There are more resources available if you really want to get intimate with your laptop - at a minimum, it's good to know how to clean the CPU heatsink. I came across the following links that can help:

The Laptop Repair Workbook

I'll be the first to admit that when it comes to laptops that are not barebones (such as the ASUS barebones), DIY repairs and even routine maintenance can be a daunting task. I would appreciate links readers may have on this topic - don't hesitate to drop me a line!
