"An Evaluation of the ThermoChill Radiators"
Bill Adams - 7/25/03

HE 120.1 Test Results:

Graph 10

Graph 10

The HE 120.1 was tested with fans only, in various combinations. Interestingly, two Delta 1212VHE fans at 7V were quite similar in performance to one Delta at 12V, yet the noise was substantially less. These fans might be a ‘solution’ for users interested in a dual performance mode. Again, the Papst low noise fans were not good performers.

HE 120.2 Test Results:

Graph 12

Here it can be seen that the two Delta 1212VHE fans perform excellently at 12V, and when under-volted to 7V for lower noise, still retain 67% of their capability. The Papst 4312L fans conversely, have only moderate capability at 12V and deliver little when under-volted to 7V.

Again it can be seen that the radiator benefits little from the 11.4 lpm flow rate.

HE Radiator Comparisons

Due to their identical construction, other than their length, the dissipation capability of the HE 120 series can be extrapolated as shown in this graph.

Graph 16

Graph 16

The ThermoChill radiators’ flow resistance at different flow rates can be compared in this graph:

Graph 17

Graph 17

As expected, the HE 80 has the highest flow resistance followed by the HE 92.1. Due to the additional number of tubes in parallel, the HE 120.1 has the lowest resistance with higher resistances from the HE 120.2 and HE 120.3 due to their increased length.

The connectors utilized also may add to the radiators’ flow resistance and their effect is shown below. The differences shown from the baseline 3/8” NPT x 5/8” barb would apply to all of the HE radiators at that particular coolant flow rate. (To determine the radiator’s total liquid side flow resistance at the flow rate of interest, add the radiator’s resistance to the difference between the connector used and the baseline 5/8’ barb.)

Graph 18

Graph 18

The air side has flow resistance as well, and the HE 80, HE 92.1, and the HE 120.2 are compared below:

Graph 19

Graph 19

Since the air flow resistance of the HE 120 series is the same per unit area, at the same backpressure the air flow volume of the HE 120.1 would be half of the HE 120.2, while the HE 120.3 would be 50% more than the HE 120.2.
