Forum Wars (Winter Warz) Begins Feb. 1!

Official Forum Wars website

Winter Warz Dates:

February 1-14 prelims ( Stock score posting )
Feb 15th ( last minute posting at TRP only!!!)
Feb 16th will be an off day for roster submissions
Feb 17th thru March 5th (go to war)( Database is closed (to competing forums) on March 2nd )
March 3rd ( All disputed scores listed at TRP )
March 3rd ~ 5th ( last minute posting at TRP only )

Forum Wars is an online, team-based overclocking/benchmarking competition hosted by The Raptor Pit.  Basically, each team is divided up into classes, based on hardware limitations.  Classes compete against each other, and basically the team with the most winning classes wins the wars.  There’s quite a bit of strategy involved in class placement, and we’ve got some guys on our team that are great at that.  OC Forums is on quite an impressive winning streak, which we’d like to keep going.

Forum Wars rules can be found at the official rules page.

Some changes since the last Forum Wars:

Posting scores in the last few days will be allowed only at TRP.
Benchs are 3d03, 3d05, Super Pi 1m (with an OC bonus), GeekBench & wPrime 32.
Unlimited Xtreme & Limited Xtreme Classes are no more.
All Cooling options are allowed for all classes.
Windows 7 OS allowed.
TWKR & Guftown will not be allowed.
75% of all OC scores will need to verified before the Database closes and (ONLY) 25% can be entered during the last 3 days at TRP.
All players need to register to play .
CPU’s are now catagorized by their thread potental… meaning.. 8-threaded means the CPU is capable of running 8-threads.

And Forum Wars classes are as follows:

The A Class (3 player teams)
Quad Core (Max 8 thread capable) CPU and 4 VGA cores maximum
Unlimited downgrades per team
No unreleased architecture ES chips that are not available retail
No cooling restrictions (Air, Water, Phase, LN, DICE, Cascades)

The B Class (3 player teams)
Quad Core (Max 8 thread capable) CPU and 2 VGA cores maximum
Unlimited downgrades per team
No unreleased architecture ES chips that are not available retail
No cooling restrictions (Air, Water, Phase, LN, DICE, Cascades)

The C Class (3 player teams)
Quad Core (Max 8 thread capable) CPU and 1 VGA core maximum
Unlimited downgrades per team
No unreleased architecture ES chips that are not available retail
No cooling restrictions (Air, Water, Phase, LN, DICE, Cascades)

The D Class (3 player teams)
Quad Core (Max 4 thread capable) CPU and 4 VGA cores maximum
Unlimited downgrades per team
No unreleased architecture ES chips that are not available retail
No cooling restrictions (Air, Water, Phase, LN, DICE, Cascades)

The E Class (3 player teams)
Quad Core (Max 4 thread capable) CPU and 2 VGA cores maximum
Unlimited downgrades per team
No unreleased architecture ES chips that are not available retail
No cooling restrictions (Air, Water, Phase, LN, DICE, Cascades)

The F Class (3 player teams)
Quad Core (Max 4 thread capable) CPU and 1 VGA core maximum
Unlimited downgrades per team
No unreleased architecture ES chips that are not available retail
No cooling restrictions (Air, Water, Phase, LN, DICE, Cascades)

The G Class (3 player teams)
Dual Core (Max 2 thread capable) CPU and 2 VGA core maximum
Unlimited downgrades per team
No unreleased architecture ES chips that are not available retail
No cooling restrictions (Air, Water, Phase, LN, DICE, Cascades)

Forum Wars isn’t about getting the best parts, most extreme cooling, and destroying your hardware all in the name of cranking out a few good benchmark scores.  It’s actually more about tweaking your setup to squeeze out every ounce of performance you can.  There’s a class for everyone, regardless of your budget and skill level.  If you’d like to participate in Winter Warz 2010, see the Official Forum Wars 2010 Thread.  You can post there, post here, or contact me if you have any questions.

I suck at i7 ocing.. so I dont know

Edit:

Well I take that back, yesterday I wasnt able to get much past 150 bclk, the day before i was lucky to get into the 140s.. but right after I made this post, I went back into the bios and set her to 190bclk, and she posted! Now I am at 200x21

I thought maybe my board sucked, or my cpu was too much of a pig, turns out my uncore was a bit too fast I think lol. Bit still, you d0 guys are lucky
Deanzo's Avatar

I suck at 140 - 180 bclocks on all X58 boards, so I always start at 181

I do have a question regardign memory. I listed 2x2gb DDR21066 but will likely be using 2x1gb DDR2 800 (the choice old tracers, found another set!!!). Should I leave it as is and consider it a downgrade or list the 2x1gb DDR2 800 sticks?

CPU and GPU will be the only thing to worry about. They don't take RAM into account.

How are we doing on filling up the teams?

Work is pretty much killing me right now (legislative session), so my time is pretty much claimed right now. I haven't made any upgrades since last FW (see sig), so I can't provide much, but if you need me let me know.
moocow's Avatar

overclock your rig as far as you can without frying it (and sometimes frying stuff), and run benchmarks.
Deanzo's Avatar
In short.

From the 1st to the 14th of Feb you need to run, screenshot and post 3d03, 3d05, Super Pi 1m, GeekBench & wPrime 32 with your whole rig at stock speed (yes stock speed)

Then,

From the 17th of Feb to the 2nd of March you run the same benchmarks as fast and as tweaked out as you can (only stable for the bench you are running) and when I give you the go ahead (not before) you post those scores.

There will be a closed part of the forum that no one else can see where we will help you get the most out of your setup, and to make sure your screenshots are right.

But I do ask of everyone that takes part, is they do their best and takes part till the end (no pulling out after it's started...ie 14th of Feb in this case) as that lets down the whole forum.
tomasgi's Avatar
is there a special place to ask questions about OCing for this(not in general)? I got the whole CPU OC but I've never OC ram or GPU.
Sir-Epix's Avatar
By default you are also OCing your RAM when you OC your CPU unless you mess with some other settings. As far as GPU you can use the EVGA Precision program as a starter. Also if you are competeing you can always shot me a PM and I would be more than glad to help.
tomasgi's Avatar

JLK03F150's Avatar
A benefit of your nForce chipset is you can set the RAM to 1600MHz then unkink it from the FSB. You won't need to worry about overclocking the RAM as you increase the CPU speed.

Once you are in the competition you'll be able to get lots of tips for benching and GPU overclocking.

Deanzo's Avatar
Thats cool, can I get you yo sign up here http://www.theraptorpit.com/forum/in...lice-sign-ups/ and just help out where you can.
Big Mike's Avatar
You can in fact get me to do that, lol, let me know if I need to do anything else, I just said you referred me, dunno if there's a process to it?
dejo's Avatar
I can make plenty of runs and will join if needed (pm me to let me know) but know that I have an i7 and only air and can only push 4530 and only have 2 9800 gtx's, can run with 1 or 2. have a 4870x2 but can score better with the 9800's.
also on the stock scores, do they matter at all. do we need to make them pathethic (bigger difference with the oc). should we slow memory ops. never done this so just asking.
if anyone will pm or post what to do or even expect let me know
dejo's Avatar
my asus board wont boot from 150 to 160 but will run any other bclk up to 216
Deanzo's Avatar
Cool.

From there Ray will pm you the pass word to the Police forum, in there, there will be a link and pass word so you can add yourself as a cop to the data base. In the forum there will also be all the links/pass words you will need to update the stock and overclocked data base.
There will/should also be a how to, what to do type of thread.

Well that made it sound harder than it is, it's dead easy, just a bit of time when up dating a number of posts/scores at once.

If you don't hear from Ray in the next two days, let me know and I'll give it to you. But I'll leave it to Ray to start with.

Yes you will be needed
So thanks for taking part.

i7 and two 9800's all on air sounds just great to me.

Stock scores are run at stock speed, doesn't help you at all running them faster.

But it lests us know and locks you into that hardware, and if something does go wrong, that stock scores could be used (if they are in fact at stock speed) so they need to be done.
In the past many forums have members that say they will take part, then never do, but if they run stock scores and post them the right way, as a rule you see them till the end.
dejo's Avatar
I cant get to the thread to register officially. I bench pretty regularly, even submit when I better one. I think you see what I do periodically. not a hot rod just enjoy it, so no issues that I forsee, other than HW failure.
Deanzo's Avatar
What thread are you trying to get to ?
dejo's Avatar
the link in your initial post. or do we not need to register, just post up here. what about stock scores.
also are there any specific geekbench rev.s that are beneficial. never ran it before.
dejo's Avatar
if needed I could also bench with a single 9800gtx and do a second computer run with 2 9800gtx's
Deanzo's Avatar
Try this link
http://caregiversathome.net/tinc?key...r_Registration

Edit: Please note, after you have done it, it takes you to a blank page, but it has worked (a bit odd imo)
dejo's Avatar
I went to TRP and got to register and then did get said blank page, havent posted hardware yet, do I have to specify what OS will be used, or OS's? and can I use more than one OS for the different tests.
Brolloks's Avatar
So Dean are GT's in our out of this race?
Khemikal's Avatar
I guess I'm going to go ahead and commit to this. I'm not going to promise the best scores, but I think I can improve on what I did last time.

E3110 (air)
3850 (air)
P5Q Pro
4G DD2 GSkill 8500

Might need some help on the cpu end as I hit a wall last time. Not sure where it was coming from, but it just felt pretty power hungry for the speeds I ended up at last time.
Deanzo's Avatar

If it's retail in store before it starts, it's in.
dejo's Avatar
alright fellow bench teamers, I am officially in. registered and all, havent stated hardware yet. think maybe I will use the 4870x2, doesnt clock overly well but with the tests being used I will score better with it.
hopefully someone will send a password for the official thread in the team members area, and someone have some ideas to what helps geekbench, seems I am going to top out around 12200 on it at 4.5
Porvalsh's Avatar
I'll play if you need me.

Hardware in sig. Probably won't be getting anything new...wife got me on a budget. I was thinking about picking up GodM@n's 4890 though. Will bench with water/air probably.

I can either go P55/i7 860 and R4890 or 790FX/PII 955 and R4890. Any direction?

Edit: I'm reliable too.
KonaKona's Avatar
Run the i5. Although I have nothing against AMD chips, they just don't bench as well as intel chips. They do run nice when you get them very cold though.
Porvalsh's Avatar
I don't have pots but I was thinking of running the water system with the radiators submerged in a DICE+anti-freeze bath. Not sure if this would work well or not. Wouldn't want the radiators to bust under the cold temps... I'm sure everyone would have great suggestions here.

So far I've only been successful in getting the PII to 4100-4200 range. Haven't benched the i7 yet, just got it running a few days ago.

Edit: You mean you want me to go get an i5 750 for the 4 threaded teams?
moocow's Avatar

Your i7 would be a best bet, if you can pick up another 4890 you'll be on a team with me most likely (same setup too ). As for the DICE/ anti-freeze, worry about that when we need to do the actual benching (bucket of ice/ water is usually fine and what alot of guys do)

I think he meant i5 because its a 1156 chip.
Bobnova's Avatar
I was contemplating tossing Dice into my bucket res for my water cooled peltier ensamble, i was afraid being that cold would kill the pump. I think it's worth trying, though i don't have the funds to replace destroyed stuff, obviously the cooling loop needs antifreeze too.
Bobnova's Avatar
Aight i signed up on their form. Some guidance as to which CPU would best benefit the team would be great

The 103,000 points for the 103% OC on the e1200 seems pretty tasty, but y'all know far more then me about this sort of thing.
I might be able to come up with a stock overclocking-unfriendly 4850, if two rigs are needed in the dual core world. Actually there's a chance i could crossfire the 4830 and 4850 if it was really needed, and someone sent me a bridge or two. I'd have to bribe my buddy who owns the card, but that's ok.

EDIT:
Am i supposed to get any sort of confirmation from their signup form? It just went to about:blank.
EarthDog's Avatar
We have to signup there for this?

I just posted in the thread! I thought Deanzo takes care of the team and such...

Whoops, heh. My bad.
Porvalsh's Avatar
Ok well I signed up I guess, lol @ no confirmation.

The only thing with running dual 4890's on my P55 board is its 8x/8x pipeline. Not sure if that would kill the scores much or what...

If I need to get another 4890 (like thats where you guys want me to bench) I will need to get a head start purchasing one.
dejo's Avatar
4890's should be fine on an x8 slot. wont be much difference either way with those cards I would think
dejo's Avatar
anyone know what they want for a time stamp on our benches. and where we will post them
JLK03F150's Avatar
There will be an [Official Scores] thread created for competitors to post in. You can take a look at the 09 thread to get an idea how scores are properly posted.

You might be pushing it. I had a friend having problems with his GTS250/ e5200 setup on a 400cx.
Porvalsh's Avatar
Well I couldn't get that other 4890 in the classifieds so right now my rig will be the following.

i7 860
Asus P7P55D-Pro
Corsair XMS3 1600-8-8-8-24
MSI Radeon 4890 OC
CPU under water, GPU - Air

Question I have is should I clock the vid card down to reference when I run my baseline benches? Its "stock" is 880/999. I think reference is 850/950.
dejo's Avatar
my rig will be
I7 920
4870x2
kingston hyper2000 9-9-9
and so far air, but may end up with a pot for some dice action
Brolloks's Avatar
When you pair the two you will run at the lowest speeds of the two in any event, that is what CF or SLI does.
sno.lcn's Avatar
Right now it's looking like I'll be Core i3 530 + HD 4890, both on LN2 (if my cpu pot gets here in time)
freeagent's Avatar
Hmm.

Well so far for me it looks like im going to be running the rig in my sig. My 295 is comeing back to me via fedex, that would probably be the only change. And even then Im not sure, I cannot squeeze of more then 4.1 air cooled in a stable fashion

I might get a new mobo today, this ud5 is ok, but lots of droop.. No LLC for me if I stay with this board.. Not too sure what kind of difference it would make at this point tho.. Probably not much My CPU deal kind of fell through, so now Im at a loss. 920's still retail for 330 here
Khemikal's Avatar
I don't think you'll need to. The stock scores have a few jobs. They help people learn the proper format for posting scores, they give a good headcount on who is actually going to participate, and it gives our team leaders a baseline to create a goal for you to reach for. So I don't think downclocking to reference is something you'll need to worry with.
dejo's Avatar
will we have to host our own screenshots, or send them to one of the leaders and let them take care of them.
I.M.O.G.'s Avatar
If image hosting is a problem, I could help with that.
Big Mike's Avatar
Exactly correct, one other thing its good for is an emergency backup, if your rig blows up at least we have A SCORE to use rather than no score. One of the big reasons OCF wins this competition so often is that other teams have a much higher "no show" rate than us. Heck we've had teams that weren't supposed to win anything (because the roster had been masterfully stacked to win everything else) still end up winning because the teams they were against didn't post scores.

Also as for image hosting, I can always host jpgs on my website as well if it becomes an issue, but you'll need to get your stuff done early enough to make arangements and give me time to post it...
EarthDog's Avatar
There is a scores thread at TRP that will be created once she opens up. I just use imageshack and the forum thumbnails for scoring.
dejo's Avatar
do you know what they want for timestamps?
EarthDog's Avatar
In the Raptor Bowl just a mouse hovering over your clock to show it sufficed.
Khemikal's Avatar
I've used Imageshack's thumbnails as well without problems.

PS Thanks for reminding me to delete my old ones.
JLK03F150's Avatar
Hovering your mouse over the time until the date pops up, then hitting printscreen has always been fine in past wars.

BTW, using png format instead of jpeg will keep images looking better when down-sized. This attachment was reduced by 30% for posting.
Deanzo's Avatar
I'll check, I will come back to you if there is an issue I can't fix (ie: both didn't take)

I will start a thread here at a little after midnight (thats like 6pm Sunday my time zone)

In thre first post it will cover what you need to do, post your stock scores as soon as you can. This way we have alot of time to help the members that need it.

After stock scores are posted, the pass word to the closed forum will be PM'd.

On a side note, in RL I have a hell of alot or work on at the start of next week, 16 hour days here I come
If you need help and can't get hold of me, PM any of the Blues on the team and they will be able to help, or at least know who can.

nzaneb's Avatar
Will we be limited to the cooling method that is listed in our stock score post?
dejo's Avatar
I picked up a giga ex58a-ud3 last night and have made some supi runs at 4870 and still on air, and havent even started with mem yet
Sam__'s Avatar
its a bit of a waste if you do it on ln2
Big Mike's Avatar
Stock scores can be done on any cooling, for now put what you expect to use. Worst case if you have to "lock it in" we can make sure you edit it before the stock scores period ends next week. I would have to imagine with unlimited cooling in all classes it won't be particularly relevant.
Bobnova's Avatar
So i intend to borrow a friends 4850 to crossfire with my 4830 in the actual benches, do i need to get the card for the stock scores too, or can i do stock with a single and then put the second in for the actual wars?
nzaneb's Avatar
Notice I said "listed", not "used"

That is exactly the scenario that I was trying to present. I don't want to list Dice, have Deanzo and the team count on me for Dice, and then not get enough time to actually throw down some Dice runs. Conversely, if I list water, and I wind up with some time for Dice, I want to be able to run it. The way it's looking... I might not have time for either, but I wanted to be clear on this either way.
I'm hoping the cooling method will be listed, purely as a formality (and informational purposes), and not a restriction (as it has been for all the prior wars)
EarthDog's Avatar
Or you can say LN2, and just use D.I as that is technically 'downgrade' which is allowed in the rules. But like someone already mentioned, its unlimited cooling in all classes so it shouldnt matter from a rules standpoint and should only matter from a intrasite grouping for the teams.
Khemikal's Avatar
How is this coming along team leaders?
Big Mike's Avatar
Generally that happens after you post your stock scores so they know you can be depended on.

Hey guys,

Please note:

Geekbench, 3D03 and 3D05 must be posted with working links, not screenshots.

3D03 and 3D05 = working ORB links, and it's best to edit in your name as well.

Geekbench needs a working link as well, please make sure you have an account there and sign in so your link has your name in it (it's free and easy to do)

Also, your SPI and wPrime screenshots also need the date stamp.

If you're not sure please ask.

Stocktcores are just that, just post them up on any old OS, then work on a "tweaked XP" etc

I know... just thinking out loud....

I've determined that I'm a little too strapped for time this month... sorry guys... I'll have to sit this one out
Porvalsh's Avatar
My i7 setup bit it. Not sure whats wrong. Will not boot. Originally thought it was power supply but swapped with a PS that was known to be good and had same issue.

Trying to troubleshoot right now.
icebob's Avatar
How the heck do you post a saved Geekbench score? (I think I hate that frikkin thing more than my ex mother in law!)
JLK03F150's Avatar
It's an addy you need to bookmark, because it can't be found from their site. I'll look for the link for you - it's not on my current Vista install.
icebob's Avatar
Thx dude will be really appreciate cause I just took rig#2 apart and put rig#1 in to get my stock scores
icebob's Avatar
Thx dude saved me a rig swap! Really really appreciate
Deanzo's Avatar
Another thing to look out for.

Turbo on (added multi) is Not you stock cpu speed. Make sure you have that off.

Also, your name and forum should be in the ORB links.

And you need to be loged into you account at Geekbench to make sure your name is in the link. It must be there.

Thanks

Ok, so... question. Is moving from a Q9650 to QX9650 considered an upgrade? I just bought one and it will be here wednesday... Should I declare it? Should I even use it? It has been doing WCG for some time at 3.33Ghz with 1.18 CPUz loaded volts so I think it may be a decent clocker...
Bobnova's Avatar
Seems like an unlocked multi would be an upgrade. Thats just me though.
EarthDog's Avatar
I would have to agree with that as well...looking for confirmation.
Big Mike's Avatar
When I researched this it depended a lot on your stepping, the newer non-X chips were generally better under anything short of extreme cooling.
EarthDog's Avatar
This one I have is cherry, IMHO anyway. 4Ghz 1.28v and 4.830 @ 1.5x IIRC. The X chip is a C0. the one I have now is ES E0 I believe (not sure).

My problem is just slamming into a FSB wall around 523Mhz on the board. Thank to a lot of you guys here, I use SetFSB and pushed it to 543, but... I would like 523 and a 9.5x multi...if possible.
Big Mike's Avatar
Dunno as though I'd bank on the new one (particularly a C0 vs a C1, the later stepping for QX's) going any faster than a good E0 like you already have. Might be worth a shot, but I wouldn't lose sleep if you can't get it benched in time.
EarthDog's Avatar
I really bought it to sell anyway, so we will find out. I think Im just going to stick with what I know, have, and posted for my FW rig to make it easier.
Bobnova's Avatar
So the first post says only A through F are ranked. What about G?
icebob's Avatar
You mean the spot? It's a myth
Bobnova's Avatar
Bah, and here i was so excited that i found dry land :P
Deanzo's Avatar
Futuremark have updated all there benchmarks on the 11th Feb 2010, for latest releases or the patch for your copy. Downloand them Here.

Added to the first post of the score thread as well.
Deanzo's Avatar
Not sure, will wait to see what is needed.
dejo's Avatar
these wont matter for the wars will they? I dont wanna have to dl all that with the rig all ready to go.
Deanzo's Avatar
If you have time, do a fast test for us and see if the copy you have installed will upload and give you a working link.
EarthDog's Avatar
What R teams??????
dejo's Avatar
I have no problems with the patch posted on the other thread and posting and making public. so will prolly not load if not needed. got the box al ready to crank out some numbers. hopefully all goes well. and that is for everyone, good luck and no brownouts, burnouts or fadeouts.
Big Mike's Avatar
I'm excited, ready to push this Q6600 one last time, bask in what will certainly be another OCF victory and then I think I might actually retire either the cpu or the whole combo and go q9650 or i7 860...
Deanzo's Avatar
Will be listed up tomorrow...

icebob's Avatar
Shoot we are a little bit short players wise, Class B, E, F and G are full but others are short, are you gonna play Dean?
Khemikal's Avatar
Dean, could you add the Winter Wars Calculator to the top of this thread?
Raymo1's Avatar
Scores need to be posted in the database by March 2nd (75%)
only 25% can be posted in the last 3 days at TRP..

Better get the majority of your scores entered soon..
KonaKona's Avatar
Thought it said the 3rd?
Khemikal's Avatar
Nope it says by the 2nd. March 3rd-5th are postings at TRP only.
EarthDog's Avatar
Right. So long as we have 75% posted, you can still post at TRP through the 5th.
Bobnova's Avatar
Sounds like it's about time to post some scores, being the 1st and all.
hokiealumnus's Avatar
Ok, glad to see you guys are on it. Remember, 75% of your scores must be posted and entered into the DB like, today. The DB is going to be closed tomorrow. I'd highly recommend moving them public ASAP so cops can begin scoring.
EarthDog's Avatar
Scores now need to be posted today? When exactly, to the hour does that DB close? I thought we would have until around midnight the 2nd, like 3/2/2010 at 23:59.

I just wanted to make sure we were clear here.
hokiealumnus's Avatar
You have until tomorrow. I think it's like 8 or 9CST but will ask to be positive. My urgency is to express the time for sandbagging is over. If the cops can't get all of the rash of scores in on time, there will be issues that no one wants. I'm so over drama for this wars, so let's avoid it all and get those scores posted and entered.
EarthDog's Avatar
Must have missed the drama... good thing (though I saw your post about deleted posts).
hokiealumnus's Avatar
I edited this in, but didn't want it to be missed, so here's the follow up:

Just re-checked the rules. The database closes at 8pm CST on the 2nd. At least 75% of all teams' scores must be submitted and entered into the database at that time. Don't push your luck is all I'm saying. There's no reason for it. Per the rules: "Take Note: These are hard deadlines, there will be no excuses for missing them (None)"
EarthDog's Avatar
For next wars... suggestion:

SUBMITTED OR ENTERED INTO THE DB. Not both. Its not the competing forums concern that the hosting site hasnt entered the scores that were SUBMITTED on time into the DB...right? You guys should have a day of built in lag time to catch up from the rash of submissions. But hell, who really needs that when you have Inteller!!!! haha!

No need to reply, just something to maybe chew on. I do not want to cause any drama. I believe this would help avoid that possible situation in the future....that is if I understood that statement correctly as well.
Deanzo's Avatar
30 mins till dead line, about 15mins to get it posted.

I only want to post what we have to at TRP, everyone should have a OC'd score posted here.

If you haven't, get to it.
Big Mike's Avatar
Sp4zZ is in, Kona is getting ready to post his other rig I believe, so that just leaves Moocow's C rig I believe
moocow's Avatar
chip is dead so no c-class rig for me
Big Mike's Avatar
I think we conceded that class anyways for the most part, so probably not a major loss, and we got at least some score in before the deadline for everyone else. Sorry about your chip though.
