Only about a day and a half. =)
I check the stats close to every update....if they drop, I start investigating...
I've got the two T-Bird rigs set up "headless", ala "stymee's" setup... One quick peek thru the network at the FAH log tells me if there's a problem or not, and if I need to hook up a monitor/KB/mouse to fix it.
I finally got around to setting up those "shelves" last night...took them out of the cases and got 'em running. With the rigs running without case fans drawing power from the +5v line, I'm now able to run the 8KHA+ board with a CompUSA 300W PSU (before, it wouldn't post with anything less that the 400W one). It's a bit quieter, without all those fans running, too....
Gonna try and slip the P/// 700 @ 933 back into the rotation again, ala "stealth" style... Moving the two T-Birds into the shelves opens up the space under the desk again....time to unplug the LEDs, and see how long before the Mrs notices or figures out.... (We had a big foo-rah-rah over the electric bill last month, and I had to shut the P/// down...but we just put the AC in the master bedroom window, so with that added on to the electric bill, I might be able to slip it in and say the increas is from that....
Here's a crappy webcam pic of the shelves...I've got a space at the bottom for a 3rd rig to go, all set up with a PSU and mobo mounts. don't know when I'll be able to do that though...she will see that one.....
*sigh* The things I do for my "addiction" (to Folding)

Nice series you got there. I'm going to be adding an XP 1900+ and at least 2, probably 3 XP 1600+'s into my cocktail.
How much a month do you pay for electricity without the machines running, and how much do you pay with them all running, so I'll have a baseline? You can PM me if you don't want it to be puclic information.
The bill was $76 last month, $73 the month before. I honestly don't know what it was "before Folding", as I've been Folding for so long now...:p
I know that $70+ gets the wife a bit upset....
Where I'm running slightly "smaller" PSU's in the shelving arrangement, I might be able to add the P/// rig and have it even out to where I was with the Hi Watters I needed when the T-birds were in cases...

$76... Look, I know you must be out in the booners, because you won the Redneck Overclocker Award last year... but $76? My bill, with just 1 comp on 24/7, is $150 MINIMUM, and that's without the A/C on! With the A/C, it can get up to $300!
Do you have your own generator and sell power back to the grid or are you right next door to a hydroelectric dam? $76 with all those comps on 24/7... you're cheating somehow. lol
Edit: I just noticed you're in Mass now. Did you move? How can a redneck live in MA? Coulda sworn you were in KY. But then again, I thought you were Shadow too. But I know it was you who won the Redneck Overclocker award, I will never, ever forget that pic of you with your stubbly beard in your Lynard Skynard T-Shirt... good lord. What the hell was I talking about again? I completely lost all thoughts in my mind picturing that image...

sorry. had to. The fact that you posted that opinion implies that you are in some way offended by something in this thread. I'm sorry but I don't see anything that could be found to be offensive. Mr B is this Forums Moderator. I am more confident about the purity of this thread than any other. Just my opinion. :burn:

It amazes me how much information one can glean from purusing the prose in these posts. I have been searching forums and picking brains for three weeks trying to figure out why my Duron system will not accept an 1800+ processor. Thanks Mr. B for inadvertently pointing out the fact that a system with five 80mm fans and a 300 watt PSU might not post. That is exactly the problem that I saw and now I have a possible fix. According to MBM the +5 volt line is +4.83. HeHe I knew that. Doh.:o  :burn:

150 bucks is like the max here in Tennessee. Probally because of TVA (http://www.tva.gov) but 300 dollars, damn cost of living must be rough where you live.

This is how it's put together...
The cart originally had one shelf. I had a table of similar (compressed particleboard) construction, that was in my In-Laws basement last year when it flooded out in heavy rain. Part got water damaged. I cut two pieces of that down and made two more shelves to fit the cart.
Down the street from where I grew up is a sheet metal factory, that makes HVAC ductwork. I raided their dumpster, and got a piece of ductwork of sufficient size to cut three 11" x 15" panels out of. These were affixed to the shelves, with a number of quite large screws, 9 total, in three rows. The one in the center (under the motherboard) got covered by electrical tape as a precaution. The heads on the screws are shorter than the standoffs, so there's no interference, but I covered it anyways....
I then took a dead motherboard I've got (I use it to "mock up" configs on stuff like this, so I don't risk damaging a good board), and used the mount holes on it as a template, and marked out the 10 mount holes for the mobo's. A quick tap with a punch dimpled the 10 marks a bit, which then got drilled (thru the metal into the wood) and tapped with a 6 - 32 thread tap. The standoffs thread in nicely.
I used the sheetmetal primarily so I could run a ground lead from the PSU to it, and ground the board. I mounted the PSU's on the outside ends of the cart, (two on one end, one on the other), and drilled a hole a bit over 1" diameter to feed the ATX power lead, and one lead for the HDD thru. This keeps the heat put out by the PSU out and away from the motherboard and cpu, letting them run a bit cooler than if mounted on the shelf next to them. I cut three strips of sheetmetal 3" x 12" and bent them into a kind of _n_ shape, to fit snugly over them. This holds them in place quite well.
Everynow and then I'll come across an old, old AT based i486 rig in the trash... I grab anything serviceable out of them (I've gotten a few good working CD-ROMs, floppys, small HDD's (25MB to 1GB), etc..) and then cut all of the reset switch and LED leads out of them. I went to Rad Shack and picked up three of their P/N 275-646, SPST Momentary Switch. These work perfectly as an ATX power switch. I soldered leads onto them, ignoring the text of HDD LED and RESET :p , and plugged them in as power switches.
A bit different than stymee, but he's the one who deserves the kudos. I "stole" the idea from him, from when he posted the set up of his here.... He fit more boards into his setup, as he is running mATX boards. That's a 8KHA+ and AK31 v3.1 mounted on mine.
Speaking of.....:) ... I mentioned I have an "open shelf". Well, not for much longer. I won a new motherboard in a contest elsewhere on the net last night. Brand new Gigabyte 7DX+ (AMD 761, DDR, ATA133) mobo. Once I get another stick of DDR and a CPU to run on it, the P/// will be coming back down again...lol.
Heck...even a 1GHz Duron will outfold this P///. Maybe by late July, I'll be able to add that to the mix (I've got a couple of bills to pay before I can go DDR and Socket A chip hunting again...lol).
Anyhow, CM, that's how the motherboard standoffs I got from you got used...they work perfectly, thank you. :D

The only remotely "dirty" part is the "slip it in" phrase I used twice. I'm sorry if that offend you, but that is really reaching for something that's not intended (or there, really).
OK...let's try this.
A quick (and dirty) lesson on how to replace intake manifold gaskets on a Small Block Chevy (V8) (pre fuel injection)
1) Drain coolant.
2) Remove air cleaner assembly.
3) Remove distributor assembly (mark position of rotor to housing, and housing to engine block, to aid reassembly).
4) Disconnect fuel line to carb.
5) Disconnect throttle cable and electric choke wire (where applicable)
6) Close radiator petcock, and remove upper radiator hose from thermostat end.
7) Remove intake manifold bolts.
8) Pry up gently on front end of intake manifold.
9) Holding intake at a 45o angle, remove old gaskets from cylinder heads. Remove gaskets from ends of block.
10) Clean gasket surfaces as required.
11) Slip the new gaskets into place, making sure the correct side faces up.
12) Apply a 1/4" bead of RTV silicone sealant across ends of block, covering lower corners of gaskets.
13) Lower intake onto block, replace bolts.
14) Tighten bolts in sequence, to specified torque (see service manual for correct sequence and torque spec).
15) Slip the distributor back into place, aligning the marks made in Line 3 up.
16) Reassemble the rest in reverse order of dissassembly.
17) Refill the coolant system.
18) Start vehicle, checking for oil and coolant leaks. Top off coolant after thermostat opens, and system "burps".
Now....did Line 6, 11, or 15 make you blush? Were they "dirty"?
Just curious....

There's one problem--none of my cars have an outdated carbeurator, they're all fuel injection.
Man, you're guide about your F@H cart above is EXACTLY what I was going to do, only I was going to use galvanized steel roof flashing over laminated MDF with 1" x 3' right-angle aluminum bars at the corners for my mATX boards. Now when I do it, and submit my articles for Ed (and Joe when he gets back) in July, it's gonna look like I got the idea from you. No fair. =(

LOL...Unless it's TBI (Throttle Body Injection), there's a whole mess of steps that get added (TPI, MPFI, etc are some fun stuff to work on... ).
I got the idea for the cart from stymee. He had a thread in here a couple of months ago with pics of his "cart"...he used a different cabinet..his has a glass door on the front (fancy-schmancy...:D ). If anyone gets the "credit" is should certainly be him first. If it goes back from there (IE, who he got the idea from), well, I don't know who to give credit to.

I missed the "joke" myself, and it's my job to investigate situations like you "described". If there's a problem in the Forums, it's the duty of the Moderator (and Admin) Staff to rectify the situation. That's why I suppose I took it so seriously.
kajj, if there ever is a situation, please use the "Report this post to Moderator" link found in the lower right hand corner of every post.
There's 18,000+ of you, and only 10 of us. We need you to help us, by pointing out things that need attention sometimes. We don't always get to read every thread, every post.

MR.B- OMG the number of WU's that you have completed is unreal! how many systems do you have to have running 24/7 to get that many and how long have you been doing it?
I'm impressed with how you made that nice cart, by the way.

I got "bit" by the Folding bug last October, after getting my AMD XP1800+. I had been running a P/// rig (600E @ 954 or 700E @ 933, depending on which was installed that day) before that...
With just those two rigs, I climbed the stats fairly quickly. Soon thereafter, I got the T-birds.. A 1400MHz and a 1000MHz. both top out around 1575 when pushed hard, but I overclocked them by changing the multi only (left the FSB at 133 for stability), and have them running at 1533 and 1400 respectively.
Along the way, the P/// (just the 700E now...sold the 600E) was Folding part-time. At the moment, it's Folding again. :)
So, I have for a farm;
XP1800+ @ 1702MHz
T-Bird 1400 @ 1533
T-Bird 1000 @ 1400
P/// 700E @ 933
..or 5568MHz total.
A few months ago, I got a PM from William, saying he was interested in getting back into Folding. He asked if he could Fold under my name (and of course I said yes...LOL. Who wouldn't?).
He added a pair more XP chips, and I think a T-Bird onto that as well. I'd have to go look thru the threads here for specs on the rigs, but I remember two were AMD XP class chips.
I've got a Gigabyte 7DX+ motherboard coming soon, that will eventually replace the P/// in the rotation above. I'm seriously considering selling the P/// rig, intact, to a co-worker who's looking for a better rig than the HP Pavilion she now has (Celeron 500, bla, bla, bla....).
That would finance a CPU and some DDR for the 7DX+....and it would certainly Fold faster than the P///. ;) I'm going to wait until the new board gets here, and test out the XP1800+ on it, and the 1400 @ 1533 T-bird too. If I really like how it works, that will help determine what I get for a CPU for it. I'm leaning towards an XP1600+, with the newer stepping that everyone is getting 1800MHz out of...
The jury is still out on the overclocking promise of the Thoroughbred, but that's a possibility too, if the next stepping is a good one. They have been successfully "unlocked", and it's the same method (but different bridges) as the Palimino. We'll see. By the time I'm ready to get a chip, they might be worth really looking into.
Thanks for the kind words.....;)

ROTF.....naw...I've just been doing this for too long....
No need to on a carburetted system. The system isn't pressurized like a fuelinjected system, and if the motor isn't running, there's nothing coming out of a mechanical fuel pump, such as would be found on a SBC. The line to the pump wouldn't leak but a small amount when removed, and that would come out of the carb itself...the fitting at the front of the carb is the highest point in the system, so gravity wouldn't be a factor either...LOL.
If I was copying from books, I wouldn't have you mark the distributor rotor position on the housing, and the housing to the block. There would have been two additional lines at the bottom of "Turn engine over by hand until Cyl. #1 is at TDC." and "Using a timing light, set the ignition timing by rotationg slightly the distributor assembly (engine running) until the marks on the timint cover and harmonic balencer are lined up."
Marking the rotor and housing is a much quicker way of doing it....;)
*sigh* It's that time of Monday morning, when I get to go do this stuff on other people's car... Heck...it pays the bills...
Cheers!
