I know there's a kit to to turn a PS2 into a Linux machine. Just use the search functrion for "linux" and "playstation" and you'll find a thread about it.

my ps2 sat untouched for about 2 months, then i painted purple, painted the controllers too and changed the led's so they are yellow, i wanted to change the led's in the ps2 also but i figured that i probally should not mess around with it too much, then again, i don't think i would have much of a warranty after painting it......... awwwww crap........

You can check out my GameCube mods (http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=68152) if you want some ideas.
Some other ideas:
Using a larger HDD than Sony's, like switching a TIVO HDD
Adding a 3" neon
Adding 2 more controller/memcard slots (using a cannabalized plug-in model

i was thinking some leds and some glow rope. as for overclocking i would do it for bragging rights more than anything

That's not a mod, it's a type of PS2... just like the dev. model for people who make games.

there IS a way to 'kinda' overclock your PS2. I am not sure where it is, but somewhere in the settings there is one to increase the drive speed, to make the discs spin faster. Thats all I know of! (Oh yeah, and I heard somewhere that in some countries that are not allowed to import computers, they built supercomputers from networking PS2's.)

I have an idea for a mod. not really a mod, just an addon. well you could always acually mount it inside the ps2... Have something where you just attach all the memory cards you own and then a switch(or multiple switches) to select the correct memory card. that way you wouldnt have as much of a chance of loosing a memory card or if you are like me and are going to have 2-3 memory cards for FFX you could just switch through the cards easily. sort of an expensive mega memory card :)
