Well, now that the Northwood is really leaving a mark in this community, and some decent motherboards are out, I'm thinking of building an Intel-based System.
Money is an issue, so I have to keep my spending to a minimum - The only parts I will be purchasing are the Mainboard and CPU, and a P4 adapter for my cooling.
I'll be using Mushkin3000 probably on an Abit BD7-2
Okay, here's the deal, I currently run an AMD XP @ 1.96ghz on a KX7. Performance is awesome, as I'm sure even the Intel guyz can admit. When I for the P4 setup I'm looking to approach 2.8-3ghz+
Generally speaking, how do you suppose this will perform compared to the AMD system, primarily in Gaming performance and FOLDING@home?

What is the difference between "A's" and "B's"
I'm guessing one is 100mhz and 133mhz FSB speeds respectfully.
If that's the Case, I want an "A" cpu that way I can get a good FSB overclock - I'm shooting towards the upper 2k's and into the 3k's.
Are the 2.26b known to be good overclockers? The 1.8 is $100 cheaper, and like I said - money is a definite issue.

gaming wise,NW will eat AMD alive, but when you are talking about F@H...u better stay put with you XP. From the review done by x-bits lab, even an XP2100 beats NW 2.53B easily. Yeah, FPU is still the weakpoint of Intel, that'z the reason why i switched (own all Intel chips, but P4, just to be sure, you can ask around people own NW and XP, see which one folds faster.)

well not too put a daper on your good point of amd fpu.....
but ol' mans overclocking advanture with the .13 tualatin p3 shows fpu higher than the xp in SisSandra as shown in this link http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=99098 a xp 2000+ is beaten by his p3-s 1.4ghz@1.76ghz but the p3 is beaten by the xp2200+.
In my opion the p3 still owns but intel would have to bring in back in some ways as they want it dead after spending so much money on the p4 core.
note- the system is also using pc133 ram not ddr!
added later----- after looking at it agian he shows no Amd comparasions so.... my statement may be wrong since i have no way to find fpu of the xp.....opps!

i know, P3-s are awsome chips, i own two 1.26s personally both of them @ fsb of 170 = 1.62g, i can tell you besides folding, those are some crazily fast chip, but still, my current xp folds MUCH MUCH FASTER THAN my tualatins.

hi,
listen to jd...go with the 2.26b for 3.0ghz
or go with the soon to be gone 1.6a for a 2.8ghz(with luck and the skillz)
the 1.8a wont be any better.
just a thought

Well, with an 18x mult, the 1.8 looks promising - that's all.
I'll see what my funds look like, and maybe the 2.26 will drop in price even more.

the 1.8a doesn't go any faster than the 1.6a does overclocked.
kinda weird but its true.

I just ordered a 2.26B to replace my 1.8A. My 1.8 has been to 2.52 stable, but I run it at 2.4 becasue any higher and I have to drop my memory multi(Rambus) and it benches and runs a whole lot better at 2.4 133fsb 4x memory than at 2.5 140fsb 3x memory. I would definitly go with the 2.26B if you are hoping for the 3.0gig range, its your best bet with the 17 multi.

Don't repeat things you hear from other people.
I've had some 1.6a's and some 1.8a's. The 1.6's all did around 2.4 The 1.8's did around 2.6.....one over 2.7. But still, the 2.26b is the best choice out there right now

LOL
SOME, half the people at Overclockers.com and half the people from Lima have bought one of your Intel 1.6a's and 1.8's

i only repeat that one guy i know does have his 1.6 running at 2.6 stable.

Most of the ones I have seen they are seperated by 1-2 hundred Mhz. the 1.6 topping out at about 2..5 or 2.6 and the 1.8 topping out about 2.7 or so. This is just most of what I have seen. There are cases that differ, but this is just my gereral observation.

The best I can get my 1.8a is 2.7
Any higher and its problomatic......Perhaps with a large TEC I could sqeeze a little more out of it but I think my ceiling is 2.7
(But Im not complaining) ;)
Maybe in a year or so i will try a 2.26B when they are more affordable.....But until then I'll just putt putt along at 2.4 :)

fixing to go for 3Ghz Baby........ Should be a couple more days and mine should be in. I am thinking to get to the 3 Gig range I am going to have to give up on Rambus and get some DDR. Oh well, I have been itching to buy some anyway.....

It seems that you have a good one.
The most i've seen (including myself) can do 2.5ghz on air

are u nutz? 2.8 to 3ghz? do u realize what u already have? a XP processor @ 1.96ghz is im guessing equal to a intel 2425mhz. so if 2.8 is all ur asking then its not much of an upgrade. 3ghz and more, woohoo!
sorry dont mind me, i just thought u might not realize how much power u already have. the XP2000 is only a 1.8ghz processor.

I'm not tossing my system aside, I just want to build another power house :) I just want to see what an Intel system can do, that's all.
Its either play with intel, or possible get a Prometeia for my AMD rig, but quite frankly, I'm getting tired of AMD chips and these Northwoods have struck my curiosity.

After having several of the 1.6's and 1.8's, I'd never go AMD. I mean....with a 1.8 you have a decent chance of clocking 1ghz faster than almost any XP. Maybe the performance isn't that far....but it's braggin rights.
And looking ahead at what AMD offers.....I"d definitely ride the Intel horse for a while.

I wouldnt say the performance is that far off. If you look at some of the latest reviews of the 2.26B, 2.4B and 2.53B intel has jumped way ahead in the performance race.
Plus AMD's most recent addition the 2200+ performs only slightly better than a 2000+ or a 2100+. You at least know with Intel if they release something faster it will truely be faster. I am totally impressed with my 1.8A and I am sure I will be with my new 2.26B.

I hear you, I to am doing the exact same. I'd always give my money to AMD when i built computers. I never even gave intel a chance, especially with those high prices. But, this was back in the P3 days, which we all know intel was way over priced then the athlons. When the northwoods came around, I already had a 1.4ghz Athlon so i didnt pay to much attention. But then i saw people hitting 2ghz and 3ghz. Now I had my eyes wide open. Now the prices of P4 was decent and AMD didnt seem to give u much of a price cut, so i leaped over to intel. I'am also looking into the northwood B models. With a little luck I may be getting the 2.53b this summer and trying to hit 3+ghz. If u think im wasting my money on the top dog, then ur wrong. It will be my companys money, so thats y im picking the 2.53b. I just hope they let us buy it within a month or 2. GL with ur quest to 3ghz.

hi guys..
i'm new to this forum but i just wanted to give you guys an idea of what the 2.26b does.
I have an Asus P4S533 w/a 2.26b & 1GB of Mushkin PC3000.
I got the following numbers:
P4 2.26 @ 2.736 stable (stock HSF w/arctic silver 3)
CPU/PCI: 161/40
1:1 ratio (161 Mhz mem speed)
2.5-3-3-6
Vcore AUTO (now reads 1.568 in my monitor)
DDR voltage default
Sandra CPU Arithmetic Test:
ALU-5034 MIPS
FPU-1333/3321
PCMark 2002:
CPU 6528
MEM 5460
HD 183 (dunno why the HD suffered so much)
CPU TEMPS:
34C idle
42-46C full load
GF4ti4200 OC to 280/550
3dMark2001SE: 10894
Also note that using the Asus P4S533 m/b, you are physically limited to overlocking the CPU to 2.822 (17x 166Mhz), which by the way would not even POST, since the FSB frequency is only adjustable between 100-166Mhz.
These numbers are for stable performance only.
I'm gonna slap on a Thermalright AX-478 soon so i'll see what happens.
For those of you who get the 2.26, keep me posted!

I had the same problem. I dont really know y, but try a restart then before u do anything run the pcmark test. Im sure ur HD score will improve.

Welcome to the club, rl. I ordered one yesterday, cs is getting one, and jd looks like he's on the verge! We should have a lot of 3ghz action in here soon!:burn:
Are you sticking with the same setup otherwise or are you getting a different mobo and ram?
