View Full Version : how can i hit 3ghz?
Look at my setup in my sig. When i try to set my dip switches to 133, i get nothing, the sytem powers up, but i get a long beep in an endless loop. This is frustrating, i need to jump all the way to 133 so my pci/agp dividers will be set since i don't have that as an option in my bios. Also, when i use dip switches, the voltage option disappears, so what should i do to get 133 fsb?

Whats your voltage? Maybe you should try to vid-mod your CPU and see if the extra voltage helps.

Want to send me the money to go buy everythign? I didn't ask what other stuff i can use to hit that, i asked how i can make this hit 3ghz. Look in the cpu database, the guy hit just about 3 with the same cpu and mobo as mine. All i asked was how i can because the jumpers wont let me use 133. That's what i hate, people who tell me what they want to get when i ask for help what to do with my own hardware. Pftt.

You think the vid-pin mod would work? Imma try it, i'm just worried that with my current temps, it wont be too hot. When i work on the computer, viewing webpages and stuff, my temp is 29c mobo, and 34c cpu.

first of all, what voltage are you using? you need atleast 1.85v if not higher. second, after you pin mod your chip, you will have that voltage, and your mobo book should have how to jumper it to what ever fsb that you want. i have tested 3 2.2's and the highest i was able to acheive was 125 fsb, which leads me to believe that those chips (2.2) are crappy, the multiplier is too high, just like the 2.a chips suck, you see a few that are good overclockers. now when i said what you should get, its not what i want, it what i have coming, and prolly your best chance to hit 3.0 gig. like i said, 2.2's suck, and p4t's suck, (150 fsb limit), there for you NEED a chip with a better multiplier, and a mobo that is not SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO restricting. your chip is holding you back, plain and simple, 120 fsb. see me, i know my 2.a is crappy, and im am straight with 120 fsb, where as you want more, get new chip, and any chip you get you will need a new mobo, cause lets see, 150 x 16=2400, 150 x 17=2550, 150 x 18=2700, and 150 x 19=2850, if your lucky on the last one.:D

More voltage always helps my CPUs. Just beacuse the same speed CPU hit 3ghz does not mean that yours can. Different pack dates can vary a huge amount. Up the voltage and see what you can get out of it. Most people seem to get stuck around 2.8ghz
yo, jd, sorry about that comment, I know you were just being honest, it's just that i'm getting frustrated with this mobo, I'm a new overclocker and i'm learning a lot fastly. The question i have is, why would a chip suck because of a higher multiplier? IT makes a higher overclock taking the fsb x multiplier so you would get a higher overclock easier. So what would be the exact different between using a lower multiplier? I know that with fsb, you can overclock everything, but wouldn't it be easier using a high fsb with a high multiplier? Imma sell this whole system eventually once i learn more, and buy a new system. Oh ya, and 1 more thing, you want the b series cause it's fast and has a low multiplier, right? And if so, even if you get 150 fsb off the 2.25b (or whwatever it is0 chip, that will not be as much as my 2.64ghz, so what's the point? I wanna use rdram cause it has more bandwidth.

it seems to me that higher multipliers = harder overclocks. what your saying sounds good, but it is harder to acheive. when i first got my 2.a, i said, 150 fsb, thats a piece of cake, 3.0 gig, but that didnt happen, i had the mem to to the 150, and the cooling to do 150, but my chip did not want to have no part of it. i like both the a and b chips, but the 2.26b is so hott right now, just about everyone that has one has hit 3.0 gig, and im gonna be next, i want 3.0 gig. i aint trying to bitch at you, im trying to help, thats what i am here for to help people out.:D i too like the RDRAM, but with a high enough fsb, you can come close or equal to what RDRAM hits with ddr.

I think JD was being honest with you. The new Pt4533 does go to 200fsb and it comes bundled with the 4200 Rdram. The 2.26b overclocks much better than the cpus with the higher multiplier that is your best chance to hit 3ghz on air. I am going to buy the 2.26b in about a month when they optically shrink it I think it will overclock better and use lower voltage and run cooler. I am going to go with the P4t533 it will come with 256mb of Rdram 4200 and then I will buy the additional 256mb when it becomes available. I am going to use the AlphaPal 8942 with a vantec or panaflo fan and artic 3. I should have no problem hitting 3ghz or more on air and I am going to keep the system for a year.

Be real man. With that chip it will be almost impossible. Like JD said, lay it off on someone and get a 2.26b and ddr (withstands higher mhzs);)
I don't think the 2.2A is that bad. I bought one the first week the northwoods were launched, and it hit 2.98GHz with water cooling. Granted I did use 1.9 volts which ultimately burned it out, but if a very early pack date could do that well I would think any 2.2A with a recent pack date could hit 3GHz with decent cooling. Your board is not that bad for the chip you have. I had one two, and it will definitely do 133. I would look into a water cooling setup, and then do the wire wrap trick and try for 3GHz at around 1.75-1.8 volts max.

My chip is *probably* the first chip to be shipped to Canada LOL! .. I'm not kidding, I got mine like the 1st week of January on a special order. Anyways, what I'm trying to say, first batch of CPUs usually not a good O/Cer, I might be wrong, but I've seen many 2.2'ers can't even hit 120FSB with RDRAM, here's how you can achieve 3Giger (137FSB) ..
1. Do the volt mod, you need 1.85v.
2. Watercool your chip, or vapochill it :P ..
3. Lower your RDRAM to 3x in Bios.
4. Use the dip switch for 138FSB (ON-ON-OFF-ON-OFF) starting from dip switch #5.
Cross your fingers :) ..
so just by getting a new case can get my temperatures to sub-zero (using the vapochill case)? Or do i have to get more stuff then the case.
omg, it's like $800, no way, lol.

Vapochill is not just a case, it's an entire cooling unit for your CPU socket... what other stuff? :)

Pacino, how stable is that 3.2 @ 1.85v? Im assuming solid, unless you're the type that likes BSOD's after 4 hours of (insert favorite FPS here). Im hoping to avoid 2.2, and I really dont care about much past 3.2, so if thats rock solid Im set :D
And DS, do ya really think the 845E could actually handle 250 FSB? (16x250=4000) The adjustments are there, but that doesnt mean it'll work at that speed

Been runnin' @ 146FSB since late feb :) .. my system is on 24/7, and I do video editing/rendering all the time. Not even 1 BSOD. I reboot like once a week or so to fresh memory after a heavy video editing (larger than 10GB files) jobs..

[SIZE=3] For this you will need the following, pen, paper, firm surface and a hard object (hammer of fist is suitable).
Take you paper write 3GHz on it. Next place on firm surface. Now delight yourself by HITTING 3GHz with your hammer or fist.
This is very pleasing. I've enjoyed hitting the 1THz mark many times now.
