Pioneer slot load, it kicks ass :D Newegg has em for around 50 I think. It rips audio nice and quick too when making mp3s, I average under 3 mins a CD to rip and compress with it.
Hi,
Beware with noise. My Pioneer DVD-115 is quite noisy.

I have a Pioneer DVD-116 16x/40x and it's very good. Fast data and fast DAE. But FTC is right, it's quite noisy compared to the others. I never used Toshiba DVDROMs before, but I read that they're very good for reading (if you're planning to use it as a reader for making CD-to-CD copies with your burner).

The Lite On LTD-163 is a very good DVD. I have it and really like the performance.

ASUS E116 16x/48x I have the 12x and am very happy/satisfied with it. Think asus and plextor are the best cd-rom type of hardware produceres in the world. I deffinatly give em a couble of thumbs up
How are LG DVD roms? I'm looking at one that is $53cdn.

Does anyone know how good the Sony 16x/52x is? I don't have a specific model number, but its sort of attractive because of the high CD read rate...
Edit: Here (http://www.directron.com/sonyddu1621.html) it is

They are all probably just about the same quality wise. LG Electronics is probalby pretty good, Sony is gonna be good, I have a creative 12x that I have been happy with. Just find something for a good price and that will serve you. The quality part is more likely to be determined by the DVD software you use and if or what type of decoder card you have.

I thought so, but then people have been so sensitive about the subject, and there have been benchmarks for the drives (jeez how outlandish could you get? ) so I figured I might as well see what these zealots have to say ;)

I never used a LG DVDROM before, but I did use a LG CDROM. Works great and pretty sturdy for that price. I also read that LG burners are great budget drives, so it's a pretty good bet to go for the LG DVDROM, since it's only $53 CAD.
Well i got the LG DVDrom. The drive near silent and i noticed a huge drop in loading GTA3 from my 36x CDrom.
I have a Toshiba SD-M1402, and it's alright, but it has a tendancy to overheat (pro'lly just my configuration, however) and when it overheats, it stalls (least that's what I think does it).

Tochiba, Hitachi, Sony or Samsung.
Get whatever you like but just don't get a Pioneer!!!
There is nothing that sounds more than a Pioneer DVD slot-in drive!
And the read/write speed on it or not high enough to justify such an awful noise.

I have a Lite-on 16x48, works great...
pioneer is the best disc reading company on the face of the earth. i have never seen another company's product that can touch any cd based system pioneer can put together.

I agree with Maxvla, Pioneer is who you'd want to go with. I have the tray load 116 model, it's awesome. Perhaps just a little loud, but nothing compared to the slot load imho. Compare a Pioneer DVD drive with a LiteOn... feel the weight difference. Pioneer is much heavier (this indicates a better product in my opinion :p) I'm not dissing on LiteOn, I have one of their burners, and I absolutely love it... 24x burn only takes 3 1/2 minutes for an 800 meg CD.
Seriously though, you can't be disapointed by Pioneer or Toshiba -- I think the reader unit itself is made by Toshiba in the Pioneers.
Heck, Pioneer esentially created CD's. They created Laserdisc, then CD, and had a huge part in the development of DVD. This is the same reason I wouldn't buy anything but JVC as far as VCR's go.
just to clarify why my cd/dvd drives are not pioneer that i praised in my post.
my liteon burner was bought for me and it seems to be pretty nice.
i bought the dvd drive last december from some continental technology or something... (pricewatch) my toshiba dvd (still damm good) came with my hollywood plus decoder card all together for 50 bucks!!! the card alone is worth 45. i could not pass up that deal.
the next day the listing for the dvd/decoder combo was gone. and also on continental's site. i think it was only up for a couple days at the most.

I looked on newegg and didn't see a black model. Anyone know if the pioneers come in a black model? Thanks

I compared a few of the current DVD-ROM drives before upgrading my old 5x DVD a few weeks ago and I bougth the Samsung 16x48x (SD-616F) cuz it has low CPU utilization, fast DAE, and is smooth, fast and quiet.

Actually, CDROM was developed by Sony and Phillips, primarily Phillips as I believe they own most of the patents on it. DVD was a combination of two competing formats. One by Toshiba, Hitachi, et al, the other by Sony and Phillips. They finally found a compromise solution and went with that.

Yeah, most every gizmo in the past 20 years has come from Sony or Phillips.

but they just can't figure out how to use them. sony has gone way down hill... and philips really isnt in any kind of market domination stance to be considered anywhere near the top.

Maybe. But they've got enough clout to prevent the record companies from displaying the Compact Disc Digital Audio logo on their copy protected CDs apparently.
