just how bad is it?

will it even work?

i know the p55c uses split voltages and the p54c does not, so just how bad would it be to run a pentium mmx in a socket 5 board? Should i even try?

am I inviting doom and instant chip fry by even attempting it?

FYI, its for an old packard bell p 100 i am giving to a broke friend, it is painful waiting for an hour while win 98 installs

I highly doubt it will work... the bios also is not meant for that chip. And MMX chips are socket 7.

Well, sorry to tell u this, but I think its not even compatible the Socket5 is a lilttle bit smaller than socket 7 and the CPU might now even fit.

socket 5 and socket 7 are pin for pin the same

as far as physical pin placement goes... electrically is where the difference is

anyone else?

Well, it's worth a try as I doubt that it would fry instantly but you might be limited by multiplier/FSB settings and it being socket 5, it may or may not work. Personally I don't think it will, Intel did the same thign between socket 5/7 as with the Coppermine/Tualatin processors.

i just did it, worked for 20-30 minutes but i took it out as i already had a 133 and 133 was the highest the board can go (its a waste of a good 166 MMX ya know)...;) ..should work for installation....

Doesnt Socket 7 have 1 more pin :)
320 vs 321....
so MMX CPU's i do not belive fit into socket 5 boards....
but i am sure thier is the odd board were the mobo maker had the extra pin... so you may see one.

im telling you i just plopped a166MMX into a Socket 5 mobo last night and it worked fine...they are the same socket, at least on my board, i wouldnt try it for an extended period of time though...

According to Intel... (http://support.intel.com/support/processors/overdrive/pentium/20236.htm)

i didnt know that about the extra pin, but i guess either way, the HOLE is there on socket 5, even if the pin is not in the processor, cause last night i tried a AMD K6-233 processor for a couple hours and it ran fine, but unfortulately this board only has jumpers to 233, BUT p233 mmx if set to 1.5 jumper (100 mhz) will run at 233 due to remapped multiplier, so i think im set, cause k6 and p55c use the same voltages and if one works the other most likely will too

thanks
