Hi, All!

I'm following up on my earlier quest to improve socket 370 cooling. Earlier, in this thread (http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&threadid=100870), I batted around an SK-6. Well, I got outbid on ebay, so now I'm considering other options ... :burn:

Has anybody tried an akasa (or otherwise) fan adapter on the Volcano 6cu? (Like this one:
http://www.math.umn.edu/~macklin/images/ocforum/60to80.jpg
I'm asking in particular about how good the performance is, particularly in light of the plastic cover that Tt puts over the top of the HS as part of the fan mount. (Does it block soem of the extra airflow from the 80mm?

I have in mind a Sanyo Denki fan like this one (http://www.kdcomputers.com/eui/prime/profile/39/25/component.htm) (36.4 CFM, just 29 dBA!) There's a 34 dBA version that pushes 40 CFM, but it doesn't have the tach output, so I'm unsure as to that one ...

I've also thought about doing a Vantec 80mm stealth fan. (27 CFM at 21 dBA.)

Ideas? Experiences? Thanks! -- Paul

well i tried makeing my own , got horible temps , but if u take off the balck grill thing , u can put 2x 60 mm fans side my side , wich gets ride of the dead spot on the core

note : a little bit of of the 60 mm fans will hang off the egde a bit

i cant show u cuase my other 60 mm fan died so im only useing 1x delta 38

Thanks for the response(s)!

Well, I did lap the Volcano, but not very well. I also haven't lapped the IHS on the tualatin. (I'm a bit wary of that.)

I'm tempted to put in a blow hole right over the CPU with an 80mm fan I have lying around, then lap the CPU and reapply ASIII, then try 80mm adapter like above.

Thanks for the tip about removing the black thing and mounting 2 60 mm fans. How exactly did they screw in there?

I think I might pass on that, as I find 60 mm fans a bit too noisy, although eliminating the deadspot does sound nice ...

I'm looking into some nifty 80 mm fans ... Sanyo Denki makes a 42.4 CFM fan that's just 34 dBA. They also have a 36 CFM, 29 dBA unit. I even found a pricier 40 CFM, 36 dBA unit that has fan monitoring. Debating on that one ...

I think the dead spot is why most HSF's have the fan set to draw air through the HSF, rather than push it in. ...

I appreciate your input, and would love more! :)

Thanks for the info!

Well, I just found the greatest 80mm case fan. Actually, I was impressed with the quality of the stock fan on the 6cu (31.5 dBA, 33 CFM, and seemed quieter than some 29 dBA fans I have), that I looked for another Tt fan. (After researching Sunon, Delta, Sanyo Denki, Panaflow, and Vantec.) This fan gets 37 CFM for 30 dBA, and can be found for $6 plus shipping. Not bad. So, I'll get that in any event, and will consider an akasa fan adapter for a first try. I'll probably also take the opportunity to lap the HS and tualatin IHS, even if just slightly. I also drew out measurements for a blowhole on the side directly about the HSF. So, we'll see ...

I've also considered using that 80mm Tt fan I ordered on a Thermalright Sk6. I think I'll just see how the 6cu does wiht a fan adapter first, though.

Well, thanks again for the input! Good luck getting your camera back! -- Paul
