hey guys..
havent checked anything much lately due to the fact that i'm in switzerland, my second home, for vacation...
anyway, down to business...
i was at a lan party over here last night (with an amazingly slow p3 450.... ) and showed off my future system to someone who appears to know a lot about computers (he's on a computer 25 hours a day and doesnt seem to have a life outside his room)...
anyway, here's my system, just for reference:
Lian Li PC-70
AMD Athlon XP 2000 AGOIA
Epox 8k3a+
512mb Corsair PC3200 DDR-RAM
2x 80g Western Digital Special Ed's in RAID 0
Gainward GeForce4 Ti4400
Sound Blaster Audigy eX
Samsung 151s 15" LCD Monitor (parents insist...)
Pioneer 16x DVD-ROM
Lite-On 32x12x40x CD-RW
Antec True430 430W PSU
TC-4 Rev. 2 Waterblock w/ 1/2" chrome barbs (changed this from Gemini to match 1/2"-edness)
Eheim 1250
BlackIce Extreme 2 Radiator (blue)
10ft 1/2" Tygon tubing
Nibbler, Round Cables, a few 120mm Panaflo's, and WinXP
for $2,300
so, the first thing the smart guy says is "you need an Intel system"...
i lost all respect for the man right then and there...i said, uhh, for what it's worth, AMD processors are more efficient than Intels...For example, a new Tbred 2200 performs at least as well as an Intel 2.4ghz processor, although it is only 1.8ghz...
the guy went on to mention the fact that Athlons have more of a heat problem than Intels...very true, but I pointed to my watercooling system (which i consider quite near top-notch, please correct me if i am terribly wrong)
get this: the genius says that air cooling will do just about the same as a watercooling system...because i am not great with technical terms in german, i failed to ask him how many max. overclocks are acheived with just air on top of the processor (of course N2 is better, but watercooling definately has a leg up on aircooling, not only in performance but noise level as well, when it comes to overclocking)...
at this point i'm being doubleteamed by two morons who think a.) Intel's rock and the high Ghz number is all that's important and b.) aircooling is as good as watercooling...dont get me wrong, Intel's arent bad (i think so, but others swear by them), but considering price and efficiency, dont dare tell me that an Intel is better than an AMD...but please, aircooling doesnt have a chance against even a decent watercooling system unless you happened to buy airport-strength earmufflers to complement your cooler...i simply laughed out loud, said goodbye, and put my headphones back on...
just wanted to share this story with y'all...please feel free to chime in and flame me if you wish...i always appcreciate a good, funny flame
