the poor little beast is dying a slow and noisy death.

what i was wondering is if i really need it running? i've just recently installed 2 80mm fans on the side of the case and always have them running at full speed. could this be enough?

why not just get a crystal orb or something i doubt passive cooling will be enough i dunno though

just find a fan lying around and super glue it on it. I usually use superglue and silicone

i dont have any fans that small. i guess i'll just have to buy something tomorrow.
i've just went to a whole bunch of work to quiet all my other fans and now that little thing is buzzing like mad.

How good are the Crystal Orbs? Are they just as cheaply made as the Blorbs? I have the Blorb, and I had to lap it a lot just to get it flat. Tt has the best looking stuff, but it's not always the best performance or the highest quality.

Could well be that you don't really need a fan there... but if you think of removing it, then I'd invest in a good sink. Zalman makes some nice chipset heatsinks for example. Thermal paste won't hurt either. I personally like the idea of dispatching such a whiney, weak failure-prone fan. =)

They are decent, a little better than the blorbs, but I dont like them personally. I am able to overclock my Geforce 3 just as high with stock cooling. I would definitly try to find a better solution than the crystal orb.

i have a 5v 40mm fan laying around that is pretty quiet, id be willing to send it to you for shipping.... and it has bare wires, so you would have to rig it up to 5volts... its not 12v

unless you are doing a high fsb overclock, the fan is not nessessary and only added to sell more motherboards.

Cooler is always better, regardless of if its nessicary.

i think i'll buy a new fan/heatsink for this and get another for my vid card at the same time.

since no one appears to like the crystal orb can anyone recommend something?

thanks for the offer maskedgeek but its got a cheap little heatsink on it that has a habit of falling off these boards so i might as replace the whole thing.

Get two of the cooljags 1U coolers for the chipset and your vid card.

I thought the same thing till I had a system start freezing on me because the fan wasn't working. They usually put them on there for a reason.

LOL you didn't apply the same logic to the crystal orb vs stock cooling dillema though! ;)
