View Full Version : Water Cooling w/out fans?

I'm going to be buying a new computer soon with around the following specs:
AMD XP 1800+
GeForce4 Ti 4200
I am considering watercooling to keep things quiet. However it seems like everyone uses a radiator/fan combination, and that means I still have fan noise.
Is there a way to effectively cool the 80+ Watts put out by the CPU and GPU without using any fans or noise producing parts besides the pump?
I was thinking about using a water fountain or waterfall concept to do evaporative cooling, or simply having a 20 liter resevoir. I don't have any expereince in water cooling to know how well that will work.
Also, does anyone have experience water cooling a power supply or recommendations on quiet power supplies?
If anyone has other ideas that they've tired or just considered please let me know.

this guy has watercooled everything in his pc, and has.... ZERO fans...:D
Evaporative cooling would work, but it make alot more noise than a fan at 5volts PLUS you'll make your room very wet (humid??) and it will need refilling every day depending on computer useage.
how about sticking a rad box outside? then you wont hear the fans

Thanks for the tips and the website.
A Radbox is not really an option for me as I live on the third floor of an apartment building and don't have any way to put the box outside.
I also don't have AC and so even if I got it outside I would still here it thorugh the open windows.

Lol yeah no problem having no fans if you put a 120L resevoir deep in the earth! :D
I'd try a large-capacity watercooling system, with possibly multiple passive radiators... it would still require some pumping power though. Maybe a quiet 120mm-fanned rad isn't such a bad idea after all heheh.

How much passive radiator area would be necessary to cool a XP1600/2200 down to stable temps? I mean in a hot weather like 30C+ ambient.

If you have a reasonably large rad such as a heatercore, which does not require much airflow to work, you can get away with a single fan @ 5v. I run a POS Z4 system (until next week, when my maze3 and gpu blocks arrive.. muahaha) with a 120mm Panaflo M1A @ 5v as an intake in the case, and a 120mm sunon fan @5v as a top exhaust. My system does make noise, but it's from the whiny fan on my asus gf3 8200 and the crappy wc pumps. The fans themselves are silent. A mid-speed panaflo @ 5v will put out <15dB, which I defy you to hear unless you stick your ear right next to it and feel the air moving. :D

That depends on a lot of things... the pump, the liquid, the radiator type, the waterblock, thermal material, location of parts, tubing, what you think is an acceptable temp, what your proc thinks is an acceptable temp... can't really say. I'd look around for some comparison material and decide for yourself. Can't hurt much to try some things out... and keep the silent fan suggestion in mind too. ;)
