Hey I need a power supply for testing some custom work I'm doing. Problem with power supplies is that they will not work unless they are connected to a motherboard and you push the power button. I cannot do this, one wrong move and I not only fry my power supply but my motherboard. So, any simple and quick mod to do so the power supply will run without the motherboard?

My guess I have to wire up one or two of the pins found on the connector that goes to the motherboard, what do you guys think?

these are the connections you jump on the atx connector

Thanks for the pic. By any chance do you know how the connection is for an "AT" power supply? I got an old computer lying around, would prever to use the PSU from it instead of my nice 420W ATX :).

when you jump that connection on an atx psu, does it matter on how long you leave it jumped? ~~~ forever? ~~~ i have an atx psu tester and they say just a short time?

for an atx psu the connection that you are making in this case you have to keep closed in order for the psu to remain active. http://www.gideontech.com/guides/psu_powerup/ has a guide on how to do this, and should be helpful.

I am no expert on pelts, but from what i have read most people have a special psu to run them at proper voltages, an atx psu like this one is mostly for fans (i use it to test hardware i don't want to hook up to my normal psu first ) Besides if you are really going to run a pelt off an atx psu, you arn't using the 3.3v and 5v rails at all, they are just being wasted. Good Luck

You should not have to make any mods to an AT psu.

I use one for testing fans and all I have to do is turn the switch on:)

I got this picture from somewhere else in the forusm that say you have to connecty pins 14 and 17, while gideontech says 13/14, whos right?

The green wire (pin 14) to any black wire, like pin 13, 15, 16, 17, 3, 5, or 7, which are all ground.
