View Full Version : Security Settings in XP Pro

I hope someone can help with this:

I have a peer to peer network in my home consisting of 4 XP boxes. On my machine, I run Win XP Pro (I think of it as the server-has the broadband connection) and all the others I run XP home. Recently, I had to reinstall XP Pro (clean reformat) on my machine and after the re-install all sorts of strange security issues have come up.

For example, I can share the Broadband connection fine, and I can see the other machines on the network, but they connot see any of my shared resources. One of the printers is on my machine and despite sharing the printer, no one else can see it.

I have 5 users set up on this machine all set as Administrators. I have found since the re-install, that software I install under my user name is not available to the other users/ Administrators. I have been forced to change the policy settings in REGEDIT for everything I install- and this still won't allow all programs to be available to all users ( I assign permissions to 'everyone'). Also, after installing Office 2000, and fixing permissions in REGEDIT, it can be used by all users that log on, but windows installer runs everytime Word or Excel starts. It says "please wait while Windows configures Office 2000" and then the software runs.

I did not have these problems when I originally installed XP Pro on this same machine in November.

I have been all over the security settings using security settings in the MMC and I can't figure this out. Is there one easy tweak to fix these problems that I'm overlooking?

Any advice is appreciated.

Welcome to the forums Dr.Jay...

I'm not too familiar with peer to peer networks, but I did find an article in the MSKB that may be of some help to you...

You Cannot Access Shared Files and Folders or Browse Computers in the Workgroup (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q318030)

I also found an article with regards to your printing problems, also at the MSKB...

How to Troubleshoot Network Printing Problems in Windows XP (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q314073) ;)

Redduc900,

Thanks for your help and efforts, they are very appreciated.

I had come accross these KB articles before I posted, But again, let me say thank you again for looking at my post. I am really enjoying the OC forums because of the knowledgeable and helpful members such as your self.

It seems as though I always have problems nobody ever heard of before.

Oh well, I bet it's something really simple. When I figure it out, I'll post it to let others know.

Thanks again!!
