View Full Version : Fella's can this be done?
I am curious if you could use a Maxtor 80 gig and a WD 80 gig together in a raid array?
Can it be done and if so is it a good idea, bad idea, just trying to save a buck or two:D
Thanks

Sure you can..the make of the drive has no effect. The only reason you wouldnt want to mix drives if they were different size or different speeds. You can still create a raid array with mixed drives but you will loose the benefit of the faster drive. Also creating an array with different size drives will cause this effect. (Ex)-A 30 gig and a 40 gig will yield a 60 (appx) gig drive with raid 0.You would loose 10 gig.

Raid 1 "Mirror"
you dont get 160 gigs, you get the amount of the smallest drive(80 gigs)....raid 1 uses 2 drives as 1 drive...reading and writing to both at the same time so it's basicly making a backup file on another hd in case 1 fails...it really depends on what type of raid set up you'll be using..
Ok great, thanks for the quick response:)

it's really not worth it unless it's an import business computer or just an important computer.. just use 160 gigs..
So if I use 2 80 gig drives it will only show 80 gig?
Is this what you are saying?

But with raid 0 you get the 160 gb, and its faster too. It writes half the data to each drive. A raid 0+1 is just the two combined, with 4 drives.
U do get a nice increase in HD speed if you are going to use a RAID 0 setup. I did PCMark2002 with HDs set up normaly and got 712 points, then after setting up a RAID 0 i used PCMark2002 again and got 1056 points. There are afew guys getting between 1200 and 1400 with the RAID 0 setup.

My sister is currently running a 40GB 7200rpm Maxtor and a 40GB 7200rpm Quantum Fireball hard drives in RAID0.
Not even a single hickup BUT! the whole Maxtor/Quantum thing was a mistake. We went to the store thinking we were getting a Maxtor (Says on box), and when we got home, it wasnt a Maxtor but rather a Quantum hard drive.
It kinda sux but I heard the Quantum fireballs KA are as easily as fast as the older Maxtor 7200rpm drives? no?
