Alright, I am running F@H as a service in Win2kPro, and I was wondering how I could look at the actual console?

Look at the log file in the main directory with the console, FAHlog.txt, it gives the same info.

Thanx, so how will I know if there is something in the queue? Or if something can't be sent?

How do set up FaH as a service? I don't see any documentation for that anywhere.

Most of my folders are W2K, server and pro.

Its great, I am gald I did it.

From the FAQ

In Windows open the Control Panel and open Scheduled Tasks. Then click on Add
Scheduled Task. I will assume you are running the console (non-gui) version,
so you will have to click on the browse button and find the console exe file.

Then you can name the task and select When my Computer Starts. Next screen
you would enter Administrator in the user name field and the password you set
up for Administrator. Then on next screen, click on the open advanced
properties when I click finish.

After you click Finish, a new window pops up, click on the settings tab and
uncheck Stop the task if it runs for 72 hours 0 minutes. Click Apply and
then OK. Then when you re-boot it will start FAH console and you won't see
any Command Prompt window.

It will continue to fold hidden even if you log out.

It will work on the GUI version as well. You just pick the GUI exe and when
you re-boot, it runs and there is no icon in the tray next to the clock.

That should do it!

Then pair it up with EMIII to keep an eye on it! :)

It never occured to me to run this as scheduled task. At least that way it will automatically restart on power failures without me having to be around to log in...

Thanks.

I have succesfully run F@H 2 and 3 as a service. Go to:
www.firedaemon.com it will explain how to do it, and it is possible and very usefull to hide it.

This is why I like it! :D

It doesnt show up, AND you don't have to log in for it to run!

It even works when my brother logs in under his name! (I had to give him an account, he was sick of our old P///, and I'm a nice guy ;) :))

Through a ton of trial and error I think the best way to inconspicuosly run F@H on a multi user W2K network with logon's, roaming profiles, and restarts remains using the scheduled task feature of the OS.

I've used the scheduled task set up to run both the text only and the console client with v2 and v3 on about 16 machines.

Just remember to go to the advanced settings and uncheck the box "Turn off the task if it runs for more than XXX hours."

That's how I do it but, how do you do it without a password to log on? If the computer boots without a password, the FAH scheduled task will not run! How do you get around that?

Check this out (http://www.nelliott.demon.co.uk/distributed/seti_service.html)

I stumbled across this a little while ago. I'm using this method on a few boxen at work. So far it seems to work pretty well. The thing I like about it is that once the scripts are written, installing on LOTS of pc's is just a breeze.

I believe How??? is using a similar setup if he is able to start/stop 300+ boxen in 8 minutes.

I just do the "Scheduled Task" thang here at home, its definately the easier route.

edit: longing for a spell checker...

Start/Control Panel/Scheduled Tasks and hit "add a scheduled task" or if you already have that installed, right click the F@H task and go to properties.

On the third tab, "Settings," there is a check box labeled "Stop the task if it runs for:...." uncheck that.

Then on the first tab, "Task," there is a "Run as" feature. I use an admin username and password here so it will run as if it was started by an admin when the machine boots up.

Thus, the client will run as long as the machine is on no matter who is logged on or if there is anyone logged on in the first place.
