First of all, hello to everyone, this is my first post here :-) I'd just like to chip in something off the wall on a cooling fluid note, as I thought this must be something that no-one's tried yet. Although risky, what about using mercury as a cooling fluid? you could silver plate the waterblock inside to make the mercury "stick" to it, and you would negate any sub zero coolant freezing problems. This is obviously an extreme measure to take and has numerous cons, the mercury vapor being toxic not the least one. It would be interesting to try though... I'll look up some details on specific heat capacity and freezing points - although i'm pretty sure that the freezing point is something silly like -200C.
On a different note, I've just recently milled my own copper watercooling blocks for my dual athlon system, and bought a couple of 220watt peltiers - although i dont think i need 220watts as i read that my MP2000's only dissipate 66Watts max. I'm also building the peltiers power supply as well. To date, I haven't taken any pictures of it all, but any comments on my thoughts are welcome :-)

mercury is dangerous stuff and i can guarentee cooling it will be a problem if you want to go extreme run ln2 with a ln2 compressor through the system in a closed loop system -120C2win

welcome to the forums!:)

and the 220watt pelts thats good for those cpus that are gonna be highly overclocked! and how do you plan on cooling about 700watts of heat comming off that???

id like to see how you are making this psu...

There was a thread here, not too long ago, about trying to use mercury for cooling. I don't have a link though, and WELCOME TO THE FORUMS!!!

Don't you think that a large waterblock full of mercury will rip your socket right off your mobo? If you really plan on trying this, I would suggest you mount wheels underneath your case first if you like LAN parties :D

Thanks for the replys, food for thought, even if the hypothetical mercury cooling is a little over the top. In reply to masked geek about getting rid of the 700watts of heat, i'll have to see what effect adding the peltiers has on temperature rise in the water. I did test the water cooling circuit out on a dry run the other night, without a cpu, but cooling a tinfoil cup of water on the peltier and water block, and didn't notice a significant rise in water temps, even though the pelt made about an inch diameter quarter inch thick block of ice in the "cup" in about 3 / 4 minutes.
The power supply is a different matter, and i'm going to build a 1kw supply just to nicely over rate things, with some 100A diodes and a hefty transformer, plus this huge capacitor (100,000 uF) i've had kicking about. Electronics is something i know about, and can design circuits like fan speed monitors / power supplies / whatever. If that's any use to anyone by the way, let me know, and i'll knock up some circuit diagrams for you if i have the time and don't get inundated with requests. Cheers for replying - will check in again soon :-)
