View Full Version : S/PDIF optical...but no sound????
I have connected my spdif optical from onboard IT7 SPDIF to my receiver and I can only hear windows sounds...
Also when testing all 6 channels via audio driver I can only hear front left and right.
Audio from CD-ROM can only listen via analog line out. What am I doing wrong here? My receiver has DD, PLII, DTS and optical-in. Anyway, so far no luck with 5.1 output from the mobo.

Make sure everthing is plugged into the MB exactly where it's supposed to go. Make sur eyou've plugged it into your reciever properly. Check and make sure you have the correct drivers installed. In you're volume control properties, in windows. make sure you have the "CD Digital" slider enabled.

Remember too, that not all sound card's digital out support pass through of digital audio from a DVD. Also, the DVD software player itself may have a "Pass Through" option if your sound card supports it. Basically, that tells the drivers to pass the compressed digital audio track straight through the sound card's digital output to be decoded by an external unit.
acctualy I got it to work partialy,
cd sound goes to receiver via analog out/in and it sounds good. At least I can use PLII and so on.
Games can output via SPDIF acctualy and they sound just great.
Still have to try DVD movie and DTS/DD decoding though.
Anyway, I would like to listen to CDs via SPDF out as well but for whatever reason can not get this to work. My DVD-ROM is connected via sound cable to the mobo (CD plug next to audio chip). Drive also has digital out connector but I have no digital in connector on mobo. I am missing anything.
And in volume control I coudnt find any CD digital option there. Where should I look for it?
thanx for all the input guys......

Ahhh... your mobo then has no digital cd input. I'm not sure if that would make a difference. Can you hear your CDs fine through your normal computer speakers or headphones? If you can, then the sound card probably can't pass the audio to the digital out.
If thats the case, grab a copy of EAC (Exact Audio Copy). It plays CDs by digitally reading the data. Think of it as ripping the CD, without actually ripping it. The data is played through your sound card just like a normal wav file would be played. And since you can hear your sound card through the digital line, then you sould be able to hear the CD.
Btw, there may be other CD playing software out there that directly reads the data instead of playing the CD normally. But EAC is the only one that I know of myself.
is this the only way to get cd pass through sound card?
there must be some other way....
I also saw EAC on download.com but only the beta version and it seems to be brand new stuff. Do you have any experience with it. Does it work, any problems?
Because the SPDIF I dont want to install separate sound card but perhaps I will do. I was thinking about santa cruz but in fact this mobo via receiver sounds pretty good. Should I get the extra sound anyway?

Open up your volume control with all the sliders. Go to "options" then click "properties". You should see a window with a listing of various sound controls with little check boxes next to them. scroll down till you see "CD Digital", and make sure there's a check in the check box. It should then appear along with the rest of your sliders. After that move the slider up about halfway and check to see if you're getting a digital signal out to your reciever. You also want to check and make sure you hae a S/P-dif audio cable running to your sound input on your MB.
I dont see cd digital in volume control properties. There is spdif though that I already checked out.
and what audio cable to spdif input on mobo are you talking about?
There is an audio header next to audio chip with several pins but according to manual its a header for front audio connectors. There is however one spdif-in pin there though.
So, what spdif cable to mobo?
I got it, I got it, finaly...CD didital and it rocks via spdif
the problem is that I now that I lost windows sounds over SPDIF except windows start and exit sound, strange.
\Geez, something is mixed up, big time
