On my second computer I'm using onboard AC'97 sound and the quality is good enough for me (using headphones).
Now I read that it drops 10 FPS off games.
Do you think if I went and bought a cheap soundcard those FPS wouldnt drop?
Sound cards are one thing Im not an expert on with computers :)

Where did you hear that on board sound drops the FPS?
I have not heard of that one.

nor have I. It may have at one time slowed down the system a bit overall, but not specifically the vid card.

I have heard that
and have felt it in teamfortressclassic
sound lags and if you have a slow cpu it will decrease your whole computers performance

it's simple to find out. Run a benchmark. Disable on board sound in your bios........run a benchmark..........
see if the score is different.

Well yea, I know it makes a difference. I've done the benchmarking. And I lose around 10FPS like i said.
Im wondering if a PCI card will have the same effect.
I have a SB LIVE! and that doesnt do it, but for the 2nd comp im not willing to buy another SB Live, so im wondering if you guys experience it with a cheaper sound card?
Thanks!

I, personally, was wondering how the Turtle Beach Santa Cruz was. I have heard it will really stand up to the SBLive at half the cost. Anyone using on now?

get a card with some sort of sound processing unit. An SB Live! Value would be great, but at the very least a soundcard such as the Montego from Turtle Beach or any card using the original Aureal Vortex chipset should do nicely.
