Hi.

A friend of min ejust bouhgt an ax-7 with a 47cfm papst fan, applied som thermal grease (looks like artic silver but it aint) and bootet the computer, the first the he did were entering the bios and see how hot this cpu would get at idle......it went up to 60c....

He then added some more thermal greae, wich didnt help, added some more, didnt help, removed it all and applied a very small amount and the tempature still remained the same.

The mobo runs @ 28c so the case temp dont seems to be really high.

What is he doing wrong ?

Did he clean the CPU and HS thoroughly? You may have thermal tape residue or some protective coating interfering. Are you sure the fan is spinning?

Something is definitely wrong with the mounting system there. I noticed one thing with mine...i doubt it is ur problem tho as it didn't make this much of a difference...is the clip. It didn't put near the pressure on the CPU that my SVC GC68 did. Most ppl worry about their clip being too tight....i thought mine was too loose. So i put a shim under the clip on top of the copper plate on the bottom of the heatsink. But there must be something else wrong. That heatsink is not mounting properly somehow.

when he attach the heatsink on, it looks quite clear that the heatsink is on thight because the thermal paste divides up nice and smooth leaving the "mark" from where the cpu die fits in.

Could there be any kind a "missing link" between the copper plate and the rest of the hs that somehow makes the heattransfer worse ?

Kingdom, it would help if you would give us some info on the system, mobo, cpu, ram, etc....(see sig)
What voltage are you running to the cpu??

amd xp1800
asus a7v333 mobo
512mb pc2100 ddr kingston ram
Gf2 gts
sb live
300watt pw supply

The cpu are running at 1.75v

He tried to lower the cpu speed to 1150mhz and its still the same :/

I'm inclined to think that your temp sensor is off. is there any known issues w/ the temp sensor on that board?

I know this is probably a stupid question, but which way is the fan blowing on the AX-7? Into or away from the heatsink.

Don't laugh too loud, my buddies 12yr old son was upgrading his PC. New MOBO and CPU, buys a Swiftech MCX462 w/ a 84cfm Tornado. Calls me to say his temps are sky high. I go over and he has the fan blowing away from the heatsink. He swore he had it pointed into the heatsink, but must have flipped it over during the install. Thought I would pee my shorts.

O my god yes

it is very off, over the 3 Asus board i tested it was average 14c on the high side. You can go into motherboard monitor and set ur variance so it still displays the correct temp.

On the ax7 there is no thermal tape or coating, so ur good to go there. Also trust me i have 2ax7 for amd and 1 ax478 for p4 they have MORE than enough clamping pressure. 25lbs is recommended. They meet that if not exceed it.

Go into motherboard monitor and go to ur cpu die temp, under the Visual field you will find a setting that will allow you to compensate for temp readings by a # that u set. my 1900+@1760 1.75vcore was liek 44c idle using an ax7 and a 53cfm metatronics.

In my opinion for your setup id say your looking at 40-42c idle, i would set my compensation to read 42c idle and set to 0% error variance. That will lower ur visual temp to display a more corret temp that the badly reporting thermal probe under the chip

Yea, make sure ur fan is indeed blowing in. If it is, then I'd assume the temp sensor is screwed :)

Try some stress testing to see if the pc is stable.

Guys, the A7V333 reads the on die sensor inside the core of the CPU, it is not off it is accurate. It reads hotter than you are used to seeing cause it takes temps from the CENTER of the core. A 47CFM fan is crippling the AX-7!!! That sink is desinged to be used with a 38mm thick fan with focusing vanes such as the 68 & 80CFM delta's and the dreaded 84CFM Tornado. Replace that weak fan with one of the above and your temps should drop to around 38-40C Idle at stock voltage.

False. My epox also reads from the internal diode and I can tell you that 60c idle temps is too high.....even from the diode. I've used a 48cfm fan w/ the AX-7 and achieved superb cooling at default voltage/clock. This is a case of either improper installation or inaccurate temperature readings.

Actually my EPOX 8K3A+ runs at 59*C idle and 64*C under load. Mind you though the air temp is 39*C right now though. This is with AK-7 lapped to a mirror finish, the dreaded 84cfm Tornado, and AS3. Even with these temps the rig never gives me any issues and the heatsink is only slightly warm to the touch.

That also sounds a bit high, hehe.....but, you are in 39c room temps and Kingdom's mobo temp is 28c.

Here is a concept, instead of people swapping there HSF everytime a latest/greatest one comes out, (at $30-75 ea.) why not invest in a room A/C.
It is almost impossible for even a H2O set up to keep things cool, when the room temp is 85-95F.
Before moving to this house, I had an apartment w/ no A/C. Looked in the paper and Trading times I found a used room A/C for $100. My system dropped 12-15C.
Lets do the math, tell me no one out there wouldn't spend $200+ to get a 10-15C drop in temps. Yet rather than spend $$ on A/C to fix the root of the problem, they complain there $70+ HSF is not working as advertised. LMAO.

Well, it seems like he got the problem fixed, he lapped the hs, and almost washed the cpu from old thermal grease wich most have been isolating somehow, and now it is at 43c idle, he havent done a full load test yet.

I really appreciate everones help inhere, its amazing to see ppl beeing so helpfull and, yes very intelligent :) Have a nice weekend :)
