i dont know the tech of this question and im sure someone would respond that does. but i belive the only way to flash is out side an os like booting to the a: prompt with a 98 startup disk
You should not flash from the XP command prompt...very unsafe, and it may not let you anyways, since you are still using memory managers. You need to boot fresh from a floppy, and it should work fine.

It is best to do flashes in a pure DOS enviroment. With no memory managers or anything being loaded other then whats neccessary when flashing. Flashing is very easy but can kill your computer if not done correctly. It is suggested by some to have UPS when flashing as if the power goes out (which is rare but could happen) when flashing you are toast pretty much. If you have a boot disk such as one you can create in Window 9x on boot just choose minimal boot and that should put you in good shape to flash. This is just a tidbit of info. So becareful is my suggestion. And lastly I seriously do not suggest Flashing your Bios within Windows of Any Flavor 9x or 2k or XP. I still see alot of comments that its unsafe and the programs that do flash in these enviroments are still deeply beta according to my reading.

Yakbak,
So just boot off my floppy, ive never made a bootdisk wint winxp, how do I go about doing that?
Go into My Computer, right-click your floppy drive, and select Format.
In the Format dialog box, make sure the checkbox for Create an MS-DOS Startup Disk is selected. Format the disk.
Then, copy over the BIOS flash program and the flash image file. You then boot off this disk and should be set for flashing.

I would agree with you 99% of the way on this, although the exception would be Gigabytes flashing utility. I have used this with no problems at all on a Gigabyte board, but then I would only trust it on a Gigabyte with Dual Bios.
