I am getting 63 Celcius running prime 95, see my sig for components. Currently I have the fsb set at 172 with a divider of 1:1. I'm getting 2752mhz on this 1.6a, could go higher but the temp scares me.

Upgrade your Heatsink to a ThermalRight AX-478 with a PanaFlo. Link (http://www.heatsinkfactory.com/subcat.php?cat=1013)

You gonna start hitting the throttling feature on that processor when it hits the 60's, P4's drop clock cycles to keep from overheating and there's no easy way to determine it's happening. I'd back it off til you can get some better cooling, it's time for water for that puppy :D

4X4, I have an ax-478, I'll try a better fan though. Thanks mjones, I was thinking of water cooling; how much do the systems run ya for?

Home built watercooling system is under $100; pre built, buying all the components is about $200.

Hey.. I'd down clock that dude..
Thats way to high... especially for aircooling
That chip wont last more then 4 months

haywire,
do you have data to back that up. It only runs that hot with prime 95, when I fold it hits 53 maybe 54. Gaming wont get it as hot as prime95 does. I dont think 63 is going to take that muck life out of it.

the thermal "throttle-back" occurs around 66 - 70 deg. die temp.

Explain Thermal "throttle-back" please, ive never heard of this.

When your CPU gets too hot, the Pentium4 will automatically lower it's speed, so it doesn't overheat; this is a "feature" of it. :)
How hot are case temps and ambient first of all?
I wouldn't recommending upgrading everything before you don't know whether the actual problem is his heatsink not working. He lives in Arizona which is a hot place, how hot does it get there?
You might want to try a more agressive fan on the heatsink since high preforming heatsinks need lots of air to take off the heat that they're transferring.
Try lapping your heatsink if you have some spare time (Do a search for Hoot's method).
If you don't have Arctic Silver, pick it up (I prefer AS2 over AS3, seems more efficent over a long period of time and AS3 is very slippery like teflon so I'm guessing it's kind of losing it's pattern over time). Apply AS using these instructions:

Hey Yodums,
Well it gets pretty hot in Arizona, but now the ambient temp is about 78 to 80 F, in my room. In the afternoon it gets warmer. I already have arctic silver 3 on now, and it was applied correctly, I can reapply some more maybe thicker. I can try a different fan, the one I have now is a ys tech with the variable speed, the max rpms are around 3600. What would you suggest as a fan thats not going to sound like a jet. My case temp now at idle is 36 C, and cpu is 48 c. Load is up to 63 C on the cpu and 49 C in the case, or system. Now thats running prime95, and only prime95 gets it that hot. Folding only gets it to about 54 to 55 C load.

AS3 should be applies as THIN as possible.
It is meant to fill up the microscopic holes in your heatsink; so you do NOT want it thick.
Your 101 on AS3. :p

I would add some case fans to your system to lower the case temp a little, maybe add a duct from the side of your case to the cpu. This will improve your temps a bit. Use 120mm fans if you don't want your pc yelling at you! :D
