Hi, I'm interested in purchasing a new laptop and I was wondering what everyone thinks about the brands out there. If I had the choice of building a custom one I would because I have built my past three desktops on my own, but it's different with laptops.
I've had experience with Dell, Sony, and Toshiba laptops and I'm leaning towards toshiba at times, but then again I heard that Hewlett Packards are the best, hmmm...
Does anyone have distinct advantages or disadvantages about each? I'd appreciate any advice.
Thanks!

Do not go with Compaq. I have had problems with the last two computers I bought from them. They all work fine now but my laptop and desktop both had to be sent back once and both times I recieved new ones that worked.
I have no experience with any other company besides Compaq.

I have a fujitsu and I've never had any trouble. Granted its only a 500mhz celeron with 4mb ati rage fury pro, win 98se, 6gb hdd, and 64mb memory...
I'm just mad the cpu is soldered to the board and not in an actual socket, but I guess upgradeability of laptops is not very high in the manufaturers' priorities. All I use it for now that I have a killer PC is doing homework while I'm working all night long. It played BG2 pretty well. Oh and it folds proteins (http://folding.stanford.edu) almost 24/7. :D
Wonder if I can overclock it with cpucool? Or if win2k would do it any good, especially if I get another 128mb of ram in there?

I like that...
I had to buy an HP for work one day b/c we needed it that day and thats all I could find in like 5 stores...go figure.
Well, it has XP home ofcourse, so I'm trying to get Win2k working on it for our Novell Network. (The guy has used it like a month and just brought it back to have the OS changed)
Anyway, HP's support is horrid. They basically don't support any other OS on that machine, and will not provide drivers for any other OS. And their only support is a small forum where users help each other out. Its not a true techincal support forum, there are no HP people answering questions. Just HP people congratulating their own customers for answering others questions.
I've got everything working except the soundcard now. Its simple stupid VIA AC'97. But nothing seems to work. None of the drivers from VIA Arena, and none of of the windows update drivers. The ones that do install claim it works fine, but theres no sound!
The problem is, according to other customers in HP's support forum, is that HP has coded the chip with their own identifier code so you must use the OEM driver for HP's. And, its not on the recovery CD or the web...
I'm hoping now that one of the customers of HP can tell me exactly which driver they used (there are like 25 OEM versions of the driver included in the VIA Arena Zip file, but only have numbers to identify them).
Oh, and while in those forums, I've gotten to read others problems with these laptops...problems like overheating, stability issues, and typical HP-Junk Syndrome.
Toshiba's are a good bet, I've heard mixed things about the Dell laptops, and I've heard good things about the Sony's although they tend to be a tad bit more expensive.
