This is a bit of a long winded story , so please bear with me:-
Got a call from a friend saying that his comp would post one in twenty times, so I assumed problems with the mobo or CPU. Swapping my Duron for the Tbird established that it was indeed the CPU, so the pencil trick was removed by washing the chip, and thoroughly cleaning with isopropyl. This time the Tbird would post, but windows would lock or the BIOS screen would be corrupted in my Gigabyte board. We must have tried about 10 times to get it to work correctly.
Spotting an Iwill in a sale, I decided that I would offer my Gigabyte and 256Mb of RAM to my friend and he would buy a new XP1800+ to go in it. When the Iwill arrived I built up his system first and sent him on his merry way (I would be too at the price he got it for ;) ) and procceeded to test my system.
Imagine my disappointment, the Iwill had a fault and would not post above a 132FSB with any of three CPU's tested and two different makes of 256Mb PC2100. The mobo was returned yesterday, which left me with my friends Asus A7V and a Duron that would not allow me to boot to drives, due to the Bios not supporting newer Durons.
Six hours after sending back the Iwill, I was climbing the walls and chewing the woodwork. So I thought that if I could get the Tbird 1000 to post I would risk the Bios, not only did it post but I was able to install Windows, surf the Net and mess about with various programs. I then flashed the Bios, and the Tbird has been running fine since.
On the face of it, it looked like the CPU was a gonner. If I hadn't been desparate for a P.C the Tbird would have been stuck in a drawer and forgotten. I don't know what I have done to deserve it but the Gods seem to have smiled on me this time:) , also my friend is aware of what has happened. He is so pleased with his new system he hasn't batted an eyelid, just glad I have something to keep me going.
*Edit* Just incase you were thinking the chip was wet, it was dry and tested on 2 different days.
