View Full Version : Is there any point in having those super high frame rates?

I just thought about this recently. after a certain point your monitor cannot even display all the frames, correct? Because the refresh rate would not be fast enough.
most of it is bragging rights...
but there is a real use... when you have super high frame rates this means that your video card will last longer in the market with newer games coming.
for instance... in quake 3 the ti4600 gets like 200+ fps. this means it'll be a great card for ut2k3 and doom 3 to come later this year. also... these frame rates are high enough to suggest that the ti4600 will be a viable gaming solution for even the next wave of games... albiet not top of the line. they will be about where a gf3 ti200 is now.
thats what i look for in fps... longevity. which is why i can't see myself getting a radeon 8500... the fps just isn't quite high enough. and my next card will hafta survive ut2k3 and doom 3 and probably the next wave as well since these things are so darn expensive. i plan on getting some flavor of the ti4200 and overclock it.

i would get one with lots of features so you don't get bored with having that card for so long

Thats my problem. My system may be fast enough, but i get the upgrade bug.
another use for the super fast frames rate is making it slower.... with better img quality. you can then run games using high resoltuions and FSAA, anisotropy and no texture compression etc. this is why video cards keep growing.

How high can you get though? With the recent games you can barely get a real high FPS w/ high resolution w/ maximum detail.

Your monitor will still display the frames even when they are higher than the refresh rate(just as long as the verticale sync is disabled). However, when that happens, you get page tearing where your monitor starts displaying a new frame when it hasnt finished displaying the old one so part of your image looks shifted.
The largest thing about framerates is that control gets better as it increases.

The Point of having a card that has High Frames per second is that you know your card will play next generation games. If a card is getting lets say 45fps in Quake 3 @1024x768... you dam well know that you won't be able to play and NEW games with good visuals. Like UT2003 and Doom3

Not necessarily. Support for hardware features is also equally important. Sure a GF4MX will give you high framerates in Q3A but it wont fare too well in Doom3 because its a DX7 card.

I was just wondering. Doesnt morrowind(probably mispelled that or didnt even get the correct game LOL) at max settings get a pretty slow frame rate?

Yes, besides what everyone else mentioned..
There are jumps in Q3 you can only do when your frames are 300+

Like UT2003 and Doom3 plus if your running a hard core game and the framerates dip you get skips. and that drives me NUTZ!
i have the need, the need for speed. :burn:

OK, MospeadasDark, can you elaborate a little on the jumps that you can't get in Q3 without a high framerate???

And I was happy to have a frame rate of 50 in Q3 and a maximum so far framerate of 30 on nascar 2002 season...

Well, the game kinda gets screwy when you get above 300FPS. You can make super high jumps that are impossible otherwise.
That is why in competition people turn down all settings to make it look like an NES game. That and it's easier to see your opponents.

Its all about how good it looks. I oc to get rid of some of the obsolesence and to get more for the cash I spent on it. I ran my card through the Madonion analyzer and it said that my card was 103percent of an 4600. I figure games will look good for at least a year and maybe pushing it to a year and a half. I have friends running ati xperts who are just now deciding to upgrade because their cards can't play Neverwinter, Dungeon Seige or Americas Army too well. With the next generation of games just around the corner now is the time to upgrade and there sure are a lot of good choices Gforce 4 mx not being one of them though.

I beg to differ about the ATI Radeon 8500. I have had my Radeon well above 350 frames per second Hi Res in Q3A. I pushed very close to 400fps but am not there yet. Hopefully when the weather drops back down to the low 20's I will get it with a new overclock.

didnt you hear that Q3 relies on your cpu?? what cpu are you using? your card just about only displays what is there fot that and ut (and similar games)

well i was really basing my fps talk on the beta ut2k3 review on anandtech... where the 8500 didn't fare so well. shoulda said that instead of Q3. my mistake.

btw, you're welcome :D
Most of it is in fact an ego trip. Otherwise known as nose bleeds. I do however like the idea of getting overclockers.com posted on the Orb and even more so it the top three spots or so. This gets the site noticed. I find it discouraging to find many great oc'ers posted at the Orb and overclockers not adequately represented. After all it is an overclocking site. Though I do on occasion rag on the Intels, I root for any system that represents overclockers. It has been my intent to place an AMD powered vid card in the top three of the Ti4400 class as this draws attention to this site when an AMD competes effectively with the upper Intels. To this extent I have not as of yet been successful however it appears that we are close. At any rate, as I stated in the beginning, it is about nose bleeds. At the level that this Ti4400 is running at it is not about faster frames in games or for that matter long term stability, it is strictly a competitive environment.;)
