View Full Version : Why are my temps soaring?

I am having a very hard time cooling my xp 1600+. I'm running at 1899 mhz at 1.9v(runs from 1.86v-1.88v). I'm using the 8k3a+ which reports on die temps. My cooling is the ax-7 with a 80 to 120mm adaptor and a 126 cfm fan. My temps are awful and they keep climbing. My room temp has stayed fairly constant(72-76f). Usually right after I reinstall the heatsink temps are 49c idle 55c load. Then they climb to 55c idle 60c load. Now they have gone to 64c idle!!! I have no idea what the problem is. I'm using AS2. Could the heatsink not be touching the core totally? The heatsink can be moved around a little. I have tried my 2 case fans as intake and exhaust and it seems to make no difference. The temps should not be this high!!

I would be expecting high temps when you are putting out 100watts. The only reason they might rise to much is if the weight of the fan and adapter has reduced the presure between CPU and heatsink by tipping it a wee bit, i have never seen one of those adapters so that is only a guess

Make sure your heatsink is flat; sounds like it could have warped. You may wanna try to lap it. What are you case temps?

yeah, that much weight on a heatsink could possibly seperate it from the core on one edge just a little bit. I have no idea what kind of adapter you have on that thing, but if its any kind that attaches to the socket only, you really need to figure out some way (either a different adapter, or something you make yourself) to connect the hsf to the mounting holes on the mobo...

I actually have already lapped it. It has a near mirror finish. I think it may have to do something with the pressure on the cpu so I might try the alpha pal 8045 I have. More ideas???
BTW:I never took off those things on the each corner of the cpu, would that cause a problem?

If you try and mount the fan to the side of your case on a bracket which would extend to the adapter it would take some of the weight of the heatsink

This is running open case with 2 case fans by the cpu , I have the heatsink off right now but when I put it back on I will check.

65c with a lapped AX-7 and a 120mm fan on it? I don't think so.

I put the AX-7 back on with the 68 cfm delta. So far temps are about 51c idle and 56c load(ondie), but in the past the temps have increased gradually so we will have to see what happens. Thanks for all the fast responses. :)
