ECC (registered) ram is for servers. It checks for errors. This feature is needed in servers, but is not necessary with normal computers.

Noonoo! ECC stands for Error Checking and Correction (most people say Error Correction Code) and is able to correct single-bit errors. Unregistered and Registered is something completely different and does also apply to non-ECC RAM. I dunno exactly what it does or mean but they say it's better to have registered modules when you have large amounts of RAM in your system. You get better performance and stability plus it takes the strain off the MOBO chipset.
