But I figure anyone on the forums who makes their own W/C kits - etc would be found here soo....

How many of you have patented designs ? Are any of them case configurations - etc ??

I was thibking about my project and thought when I was done and if it looked pretty unique I would try to get it patented or something.. But I'm just curious, how that all works.. not the actual patent process but whos parts you use in your design (e.g x pump, y block, z radiator), if it matters what parts you use to make said patented design, any restrictions ?

I mean I'd hate to get a patent and end up getting sued or something becaused I used a part form some company and they didn't like that or something...

as you can see I'm a total dunce about these things =\ any info is appreciated..

The "state of the art". You would not be able to assemble someone elses work and patent it yourself. You may be able to enter into agreement with all manufacturers as a reseller of their products at a discount rate to you and offer the whole package under your own trademark. Pc manufacturers do this all the time. The various components that make up a Dell computer are not made by them for example, but nobody else can use the trademark name of Dell. They offer things like warranties and customer services which free up the manufacturers from such hassles.
So you can associate your unique ensemble with your own trademark and in that way seek recourse if someone copies you to a tee. Nobody can steal your trademark and nobody can steal your product and put it under their own trademark. Most of this is trivial though because all someone would have to do is change one detail like the asthetics and have everything else the same and you'd have instant competition.

This is only a rambling on of my understanding and may not be accurate.

Actually that does make quite a bit of sense.

I'm just afraid said companies would want to see the setup as a whole, and then I could very easily get ripped off as they scramble to make some deal with folks behind my back and my idea if effectively lost...

I know that sounds paranoid, but in today's world I can't help but be =\

Anyone else have any info they can share on the matter ? thanks..

My whole idea was to patent whatever I came up with, and just liscense the damn thing and let builders do the work... (I don't want to run that type of buisness ) I am guessing I would have to build everything from scratch if I was to pull that off ?

i dont think it owuld be easy to patent a wb, unless the idea is radically differemt, ive seen your desing, masked geek, and it would be easy to make slight modifications and be able to claim that its a different desing, the only way to protect yor self would be to say, my idea for this patent wos to make wb's with channels. but that would obviously be rediculous. however, if you design was radiaclly different, like gone fishins or mine ( not braging or newthin, but it looks pretty unique), then a patent would seem more fesable. besides, isnt the cost of a patent like 250k or something, youd also have to hire a layer i think. neway, im not shure.

www.uspto.gov is a good place to start. You can do searches for existing patents and tradmarks there. They also have good instructions of the process.
