View Full Version : GeForce Dead ?

I am forever cursed, don't touch me.

When I booted my computer after adding a new Blue Orb to my beloved GeForce 2 mx card.....all I got was....junk. :(
When the system boots up it goes through post just fine, when it comes up with the screen display all I'm getting is a screen of jumbled up junk. I can see the outlines of the "normal" boot up messages and writing but there is a lot of horizontal white dashes and vertical lines mixed into all the writing.

I already installed my voodoo 3 card and now my picture is fine, no messed up lines. So the board isn't the problem I don't think.

What's going on ? Is my card partially fried? Is there anything I can do? I didn't expect to be forced into buying a new GeForce 3 but I may have no choice. Help PLEASE.

You may have tried this, but is safe mode an option?, maybe the drivers got garbled?

No, good idea. I didn't even think of trying that. Another option I though might work is to try a later ghost immage of my drive. That might do something. I dont know, i'm desprate. HELP I need lots of ideas. I'll try it in safe mode but don't think it will make a difference because it comes up all goofy right form the begining. We'll see though, i'm open to and will try all ideas. Thank You. Any other thoughts ?? Help

A way to force it to use safe mode before the windoze screen is to hold down the control key from the start of booting. this saved me after way over-overclocking my geforce-2.

boot up in safe or VGA mode if ya got it and set the screen size to 800x600, sometimes when you change cards-even if hte new on can handle the size it dont like it at all- but set back to default- save then reboot in normal mode and try that.

Your card is over heating, take the fan off and see if you have any thermo compound is on the bottom of your Blue Orb! If not add some more to it. I had this problem the other night, wouldn't even run at default settings. Anyways hope this helped! Later

Actualy the overheating idea would make sense. I just took a look at the card and the blue orb isn't perfectly centered on the gpu, actualy it's not even close, I can see a quarter of the gup that's not even touching the bottom of the blorb. I'll try reseating the blorb, if that dosn't work I'll try going back to the OEM heatsink fan to see if it works again. THANK YOU

You are getting artifacting from overheating, at least that's what it sounds like. The prior post was right, you need to address this first, then make sure that card is firmly inserted into the slot.

If you're getting crap before windows initializes, it's not windows drivers (and changing all the windows settings in the world won't help). If it's after the bios and during windows startup, then indeed it may be a drivers issue.

What version of windows do you run? 98?

I've had corrupted drivers issues with windows 2000 in the past.

I've got windows ME.

I'm sure it's overheating I poped off the blorb that I put on with AS2 and a small dab of super glue on two corners. It looked like gremlin #%$^$# The blorb had hardly any AS2 on it's base so I suspect it was only touching about half the GPU

My problem is that I can't get the blorb to sit directly on the center of the GPU. It is too big for the card, If I centered it on the GPU then the blorb hits the top of my AGP slot on the motherboard before the card is pushed in all the way.

One possible solution to this would be to cut a grove in the bottom of the blorb's fins so it would clear the top of the AGP slot. This would effect the cooling performance of the blorb though so I'm open for better ideas. I may be stuck going back to the original HSF just because it fits on the GPU better than the blorb.

I also need to know what is a good way to connect the blorb or any HSF to the GPU ? Should I invest in some AS2 epoxy or is the super glue trick ok ? The blorb came with some frag tape I could use that too but I know that sucks for heat transfer. What should I do and how do I do it ?

It's fashionable to install better cooling to these cards, but I never though of it as practical.

These cards will go a little bit higher, but as you're now seeing, it is sometimes not worth the hassle.

I think you should put the original back on. Now that you've applied some AS2, it should work fine.

Ok. Makes sense. Fasionable is exactly the word to describe it. Don't know what talked me into geting another orb. Thought I knew better. Damit guess not. I learn agai..the hard way.

I will not buy thermtake ever again.
I will not buy orb
I will not buy orb
Bad Travis, no cookie.

Maybe I'll put the orb on my.....I don't know.....It's worthless.....bad orb...

Thanks.

lol Guess I'm not the only who can benefit from positive affirmations!

***You shouldn't have a problem selling the orb under the classifieds section off the homepage -- with all the tweakers about, you're bound to sell it for only a little loss.

Blue Orb water flow meter. Now that would look neat.

Or maybe I'll throw it on my clock generator just for looks.

Or I could stick it on the back of my Geforce card...again mostly for looks.

We'll see....If I do sell it i'v got a friend who still likes orbs, hasn't had any trouble with one.....yet....dum dum dum....jinx

Use it as a paper weight

Well. I took the card to work with me so I could work on it.

Opon further investigation I noticed that the blorb wasn't even touching the center of the GPU. The whole blorb is quite concave. Some laping will fix that.

I managed to get all the dried super glue off and sanded back down to the top of the GPU so I had a fresh start for the orgional HSF to go back on. I reaplied some AS2 and reglued the orgional HSF.

I'll let you all know how it works when I get home. It is very obvous that the card was overheating since the blorb wasn't even touching most of the GPU.

I'll try laping my blorb / paperweight and maybe i'll stick it to something that could use a fancy fan on it. We'll see. Wish me luck, I hope my GeForce card isn't dead, that it was just a heat issue.

Thanks for all your help. Everyone here is a hero to me :)

@#$%^^%&#%^&**(*)*&*#$@

Nope, still broke.

I'm still getting a messed up immage. I put the orgional HSF back on and tried to make sure it was flat. Still noting
I also tested the card in a second PC and it does the same thing. Is the card dead ? or what gives here ? I'm totaly lost and thinking i'm $*^%$ out of luck.
