how far above the case temp should my cpu be?

currently speed fan is showing this at idle:

cpu 43c
hdd 28c
mobo1 30c
mobo2 23c

i dont kown what mobo one and two are. i named them but dont know what they relate to

Thats not too bad, your ambient is probably Mobo 2 and actual mobo is Mobo1. It could be a little lower, what kind of HSF have you got?

Ambient is always the lowest, and that 30c seems about right if your HDD seems to say 28c... now you will believe those stories of onboard diodes being whack! Those temps seem quite good (considering I dont know which athlon it is) DOH! (this is an edit) I didnt take notice of your sig, but that temp is way below my XP1700+ overclocked to 1613MHz (around a XP1950+!) so thats good going, my temp is 48c, but it is stupidly hot here and i dont have air con.

And after reading your sig... Theres nothing wrong with the K7S5A! Its a very good mobo! Not as Elite as an Epox, but its a real bang for your buck piece of hardware! As you can see I have two...

oh yeah dont get me wrong.these are rock solid boards.stable as hell.but not good for overclocking.

forgot to mention that these temps were taken with the athlon o/c'd to 1.64ghz
oh and i only have 2 case fans. both 80mm one at the front-bottom sucking in and one the back in the middle blowing out
ill change my sig now

edit: when i brought my volcano 7 - i got a tube of artic silver 3 for £1 thats $1.53 not bad eh?

do you think adding a fan to the side will lower my temps further?

hi i have an athlon xp 1800 + ecs k7vta3 mobo..not overcloking friendly as well... i only upped the cpu speed to 140...my memory is kingmax 333 ddr 256 ...so right now it is around 1.6gh from 1.5 what else can i do with the limitations of the board?? im currently using stock fan... what are the normal temp for cpu and hd? i also use speedfan.. another thing..i have 2 hds how come the other one cannot be detected.. my highest temp reading reach to 50 for all sensors... my current dilemna is... should i just leave the cpu stock.. and buy more memory or increase cpu speed . purchase thermaltake volcano and one hd fan cooler.. im from the phili.. a tropical county :) please advise..i havent tweaked the memory yet.. any tips

my temps usually idle at around 42-44c (though it is quite hot in my room) and my motherboard 30-32c

setting for my ram are all on fastest. i dont know about the second hard-drive - i thought it would autodetect it.if the maxtor is actually 50c then yes you need a fan for it.it sohuldnt get that hot though. its probably gonna die on you soon if it stays that hot
