im looking to get a new psu, i think my 300w one i have now migh not cut it when i start overclocking. my question is, does the processor put a load on the 5v or 3.3v line, or does the mobo combine the two?

Processors use the 3.3 volt power and many times is run through a VRM(voltage regulator module) which can convert this voltage to many different voltages to accomodate various processors which run on various voltages. Generally, your mobo uses both 5V and 3.3 V for it's needs(this includes your ram also which can have it's own regulator).
