I was just wondering what kind of hardware the site runs on, and if any of the admins had any comments (good or bad) about it.

check the link in my sig (donations).....it was the members of OC.com who purchased our server =)

They were Skip's wish list at the time....I think the only thing not extremely up to date now may be the dual processors, which are good for another year at least.

We need to get that site on another server:rolleyes:. If I had the time to figure out how, I have space available.

We, the membership, bought a Tyan Thunder, dual MP 1900, 1 GB RAM, 6 18GB SCSI drives and a few other things. Skip decided to put it in a Lian Li case, I now have the Yeong Yang cube we bought for it. The cubes look nicer than they really are.

How does that data hold up, W/ all of the archived text and pictures, how much space does it consume?

Skip knows a few things and compresses the database for the forums frequently. I think he said that it was only a few GB. As you can tell from the links I just posted the archived stuff is just fine, pics and all.

Databases are now 40+ GB un-compressed. Images are all stored in the database.

1. the server can handle it, no problem.
2. That would prevent me from going back and finding things like the pics of the server. One of the things that makes this forum great is the ability to search old posts for answers to questions. Usually someone has asked the same question before.

Yes, very handy, if only some people would use this more often! :D

But, I admit, I have asked questions that I could've probably found in the database!  :D

The Attachments and Avatar tables are most of it. I'd say probably 30gb for them.

That's the problem with allowing 600x600 picture attachments....

hey skip... an idea...

don't know if it'd be any faster, but maybe you could setup an upload for o/c members and then the server provides them a link to their pic and they use [img] tags to put their pics in posts.

at least this way if there's one pic you might use twice or more you only have it once on the server.

this might just be stupid, cause i have no clue about server operations.

The software is set up to not allow the same pic to be posted twice.

I don't know how viable this idea would be, but could you seperate the forums and the database? eg, two servers:

database.oc-forums.com has the MySQL database

forums.oc-forums.com holds the frontend and scripts and does the formatting/processing

I had it that way and want to go back that way for sure. Means I need another server. I don't think that will happen anytime soon. :(

file server for images doesn't need to be much - I got some parts laying around if you want to take those steps?

What about using the old server? Or has that been sold on/taken to bits?

I bought it.

That is why I know so much about the server set up.

I kind of like the idea, and for just image hosting it really does not have to be a powerful server. I wonder if CW's dual PII would do it?

Image server is no problem. I can do that on my NT server (CPU Database server) easily.

Problem is the Forums and the Forums databases should be on seperate servers. Needs to be a RAID 5 setup for redundancy.

I have a Mobo, case, ram, Raid card, hot swap cage. Would just need 2 800 Mhz PIII slot 1's and 5 18G 80pin Ultra 2 Hard drives.

Just 2 CPU's and the hard drives would be a few bucks though.

I am not sure on the current state, but funds need to go to the bandwidth. Another server would be nice, but if Skip can not pay for the connection to the servers, there is no point.
