Hi there, Im about to go ahead and build my new PC, the components i hav selected are:
Athlon XP1800+
Volcano7 (with speed control mod)
ECS K7s5A mobo
5.1 Card
ATi Radeon 7000 AGP graphics(32M)
512M Ram (prob DDR)
10G Maxtor HD (5400)
60G Maxtor HD (7200)
450W PSU

Im just wonderin if these are goin to let me get a decent OC (say around 1.7Ghz)

Let me know wot u think and wot u would suggest I do.... Thanx

Unfortunately the ECS K7S5A is not a very overclocking friendly motherboard. It lacks options like 1 mhz fsb increments and I am pretty sure you can not change the multiplier. If you have more money get an epox 8k3a or 8k3a+, this is the best overclocking board around. Just look at my sig.:D If you don't have enough money for the 8k3a get the Shuttle AK31A, it is a very inexpensive board, but does have some overclocking options and for only about $60 it is a very good deal. Instead if getting the XP 1800+, you could save a little money and get the XP 1600+. The XP 1600+ cpus being sold at newegg are all AGOIA or AROIA steppings which will allow you to hit 1.8 GHz fairly easily if you have the right components. Also what kind of ram are youn planning on using?

Im goin 2 be using DDR RAM PC2100, probably get the TT cooling kit for it 2, im goin 2 be payin £45 for the ECS K7s5A which is around the $60 mark so i might aswell just go for that... what cooling are you using for your OC?

Cheers

that vid card may be a little weak. i was gonna get one of those when i was informed not to because its not a good card. i got the 7200 instead and its ddr 32mb and works well for me. I just heard bad things about the 7000 can someone else back me up on this. cause im pretty new to the vid cards and overclocking.

If you lap the heatsink and have decent airflow, mid 30C range. This all depends on the ambient temp.
If you could get PC2700, it will increase the odds of 1.7ghz. Otherwise you should be able to easily hit XP2100+ levels. Good Luck.

lapping means sanding/buffing the bottom of a heatsink in order to improve performance. there are many many guides and threads on how to lap, try a forums search in the upper right hand corner of the forums..

I'm using the Thermalright AX-7 with a Delta 68 cfm fan. Some people think the fan is loud, but it doesn't bother me. I am going to be switching to watercooling next week so I may be able to push the cpu further. Good choice getting the epox 8k3a+, it is a very good board.

ECS boards suck, buy an asus, abit or something that will perform... Does it have the SiS chipset?

the ECS k7s5a is a good board
only thing it lacks is heavy overclocking features such as voltage and multiplier adjustment.

If i were you, I'd get a GeForce 2 MX400 64MB For 42 Dollars. 512MB Of Mushkin For 114. 60GB Maxtor? Go IBM - 80GB 7200 - 89 Dollars or Cheaper! 450 Watt PSU? Go w/ A 330 Even a 300 Would cut it, unless you're using 3 CD Rom Drives.
