How do I take off the hsf on a geforce 2

I have a geforce 2 gts and I want to take off the stock hsf and put on a better one. Anyone know how to do this?

I did this not too long ago...I just broke the plastic holding the HSF onto the card because I couldn't see any other way to take them off safely. Just be careful when you do this so that you do not damage the video card.

PS: If you got a blue orb (blorb), be sure to lap it.

In my opinion it's not worth it. So don't waiste your time. But if you still want to know email me. I'll give you detailed instructions. It's not worth it though. For the little if any added cooling that you might get. The risk of breaking your card is too high to bother.

I noticed a bit of improvement for overclocking my G2. I removed it and just replaced the poor quality thermal pad with Artic Silver 2. If you touch the back side of the GPU on the card while it's running, you'll notice it's pretty hot, but after my little AS2 application, it was considerably cooler.

Twist it slowly....it isn't difficult to pull off. If you think you're stressing it too much and it may break, stop. Throw it in a ziplock bag and stuff it in the freezer for 1/2 an hour. Pull it back out and immediately try to remove the sink again. The freezing causes the 'glue' to become brittle and break free.

There's not a thermal pad I know of that's worth the time that was spent in applying it.......definitely replace it.

I have to agree, but in Zoopa's case, I can atest to the fact it was not worth it (still got that GF2 relic, right Zoopa?).

I have overclocked every card I've owned, and they all go quite high with stock hsf and compound. For any possible risk involved, I won't bother (of course my card's twice the price, so I treat it with kid gloves).

my geforce 2mx heatsink was just stuck on there with some double sided tape "not even frag tape, cleartape" i just twisted on it and it fell off.

Yah I still got it. I ordered a super micro ultra fine silver contact pen. I'm going to take it to the biology lab here at the college and use on of there microscopes to look at it. Then use the pen to reconnect the leads. LOL it's a LONG shot but worth the fun. If all else fails I'll have to make it into a key chain and hang it off my back pack. ???

One more thing. DON'T USE A SCREW DRIVER TO PRY IT OFF. If your going to do this do it with your hands only. Twist it off. Don't mess up your card like I did using other tools. I didn't even realize that I was pushing down on the board while I was prying the HSF off. I managed to break some of the traces on the boar = video card no work. So if you do this, use just your hands and twist.

i dunno about the others, but i managed to get my card to overclock WAY more than stock... then again, the stock was held on with epoxy, not thermal epoxy, just plain old epoxy... I replaced the stock HSF with a blorb, available for cheap from www.puicorp.com great folks, i'd reccommend them, and custom-made copper-base, aluminum fin ramsinks... Also, i'm gonna AS thermal epoxy the blue orb, right now, i have AS2... Looks and works great... im running @ 233/400 core/memory MAJOR increase in performace without any artifacting... im using 12.41 with 10.4 version of nvcpl.dll (thanks wildandyc :) ) if you want info, goto the Geforce FAQ site and get the old and new drivers, then use www.wildandyc.co.uk 's instructions to allow O/Cing............

If you have the Geforce 2 with the fan that is attached with the 2 plastic pins all you need to do is use some needle nose pliers to squeeze the tip of the plastic pins on the bottom of the card. This will allow the pins to fit back through the hole their in. While squeezing the head of the pin gently push the pin through it's hole, they should come right out.
