Anyone know how much bandwidth you need to run a game server for games like medal of honor or counterstrike etc. ???
we have like 7-8 people interested in running a couple servers so i am going to do some ISP shopping today but not sure just how much bandwidth ill need... right now i have a 2.3/768 connection but it lags when more then 16 or so people join.
also wondering just how much computer i need too lol. i have a duron 1.3 with 512 MB of ram, is that enough to host a game with 20 people or so ?
thanks, Jeff.

Alright.
Do NOT Use ANY Time of DSL For hosting a game unless its 7.1 =O
Use cable.
Get dual cable, also for counter-strike or any game USE Linux! More bandwidth efficent.
Also, i'd recommend getting another stick of 256.

I dont know the "Inside's and outsides of it" But i've noticed when im networking it w/ computers and stuff, that Cable is faster even thou its usually capped at 1 Mbit... And ADSL Runs at 1.4 i know thats the bandwidth, its the pipe, its receiving that much, but that tiny phonecord wont cut it no matter what For 20 Players.

i have cable at home but it is even worse then my DSL is at work.... my DSL has much better pings and the UL speed is better.
i ended up ordering 6mb/4mb ADSL, ofcourse i will have to get an extra job to pay for it (joke). not sure if i will keep it but i want to give it a try....maybe if all my buddies and i share the cost it will be worth it.

argghh ok im told the upload speed on your connection has to be 25kbps or so for each player for no internet caused lag. my current 2.3/768 should be plenty for that so i canceled my order hehe.
i guess the lag ive been getting is being caused by my computer....i guess you need a 2 gigish cpu with 1 gig of ram to run a server with 20 + people with no lag.
sooooo now im off to newegg to buy some new parts hehehe

i dont think you need that much power.
the more power the better....thats like saying all you need to dirve from point A to point B is a 4 cylinder with a RAGING 95 horses...which is true....but whats the fun in that.
so I say jucie up the server and make it as monsterous as possible just for the hell of it.

I agree...i surely wouldnt want one of my buddies crying that LAG caused him to die... :)
I ordered a XP 2000 cpu and 512 MB of DDR 2700 ram, the game server shall be working in just a few days hehe.

Dont forget to overclock that badboy.
Remember, our first priority here is getting the latest, greatest
equipment, and then voiding the warranty.

1.5 Meg DSL is fine for hosting a server. And I would recommend it over cable. The ping times are much lower on DSL than they are on most cable networks. Most cable networks are poinsoned with proxies....I have no trouble hosting 16 player SOF, and 32 player Tribes games on my DSL.
Why build up the server? That makes no sense what so ever. If you plan on making this a dedicated server, then the extra memory, the bigger CPU and overclocking aren't going to make a differece. How much resources do you need to throw at a DOS window for god's sake.
If you plan on playing from the server, that's a different story and I would bone up on CPU and memory, but chances are your going to use a dedictated server.

I run a 20 person MOH server and it FULLY consumes a dedicated T-1 line, I'd say 18 people would be fine on a 1.5m line. And just a comment, MOH is a BANDWIDTH HOG, IMO, I've ran other games before on the T-1 connection and was able to hold 24-32 peeps, but not MOH.

thats what i thought... i didnt see why he needed a new xp 2000 and stuff... (btw where the hell do people get the money to just throw at servers for no reason? i wish i had that kind of money, i would make more seti rigs :D )

Well you almost have to throw money at a server. These game companies are total complete morons with no foresight whatsoever.
Take SOF2 for instance. I have to have a video card that is OpenGL compliant just to run a dedicated server because the game wont start if it doesnt recognize one.
Why do I need an OpenGL video card to run a game at a command prompt level?

ok here is the ideal specs for a server
you will need probably around a 1ghz cpu...or dual cpus works even better...512mb RAM is almost a requirement...some SCSI hard drives are nice when you want fast map laoding
When it comes to internet...get DSL...cable is capped at 1mb upload....upload is EVERYTHING(about 99.9% atleast:D) get DSL and amke sure your upload is atleast 1mb upload and download dosen't really matter...remember
Upload is life:D

Hmmm...I think a Dual MP Would work, and dedicated 1 processor Just for CS.
Also, i hope your running these off Linux :O

my 128kbit upload speed makes me sad... but im already paying 50 bucks a month for this crap, i dont wanna spend more

we tried running a server again today with my duron 1.2@1.33 with 512 Mb ram and it was marginal at best hehe.
im still not convinced that my 2.3 mb/768kb ADSL is good enough, i think the UL speed is choking it at times.
should have the new server parts tomorrow i am praying that fixes it as the only option left is to go with the next level of ADSL and that will cost me an extra $49 a month :(

Heh. T1 is actually slower than DSL/cable.

no it isnt, the average speed of dsl/cable is like half of average T1.

LOL, show me a consistant 1.5m up on a cable modem, my bandwidth is guaranteed, my coast to coast ping is guaranteed, oh yeah, and it was given to me by a friend :)

???where can i check?

you can check at www.dslreports.com. doubt you would have enough upload bandwidth to host a server with more then a few people hehe.

512/80 DSL here. I get great ping time with RTCW. Some server average less then 70ms to me consistently. But as far as hosting... I can barely host for 4 ppl with only a 80kbps upload.:(
I wish there were some LAN parties around my area that catered to RTCW.

yeah i can get pings as low as 35 ms but as far as hosting i cant have more then 16 in the game or i start lagging...
the other problem im getting is when i get more then 12ish in the game my server gets a lil laggy now and then. i ordered a new CPU and ram and am hoping it takes care of it.

Got the server up yet?
I'm curious if the new parts made much of a difference...

yes the server is together and running (not full time yet)
ended up with a XP 2000 cpu with 1 gig 2400 ddr ram on a epox 8k3a+ MB. ...
i can now run games with up to 18 people with zero problems, we had up to 22 last night and it worked fairly well but we did have occaisional slowdowns. i guess i need to upgrade my DSL to the next package up.

well i would hope that you are gonna use that box for more stuff than a game server i have been running my p2 350 with mandrake as my game server on my lan i have no lag at all so far i have had 15 on it i would think 1.5 dsl would be more than enough and t1 is a whole heck of a lot faster than dsl/cable it is no comparission at all that is why it is so expensive but well worth it....but anyways that server sounds like way over kill to me
Yeah jeffnnetti, you should run SETI@home on that brute. www.ocsetiteam.com

well i have 2 machines crunching now and am planning on building another xp 2000 in about week which will run seti.
only have a duron 1.2 and celeron 733 on seti for now :(

I'm surprised you can play and host from the same line without slowdown... even back in the dorms over LAN we had slowdown when a kid split his ethernet line using a switch (one went to server, one went to his machine) and the LAN is like 10mb/s.
Anyways, I'm glad it's working for you :D So do you host CS games and more importantly... are you going to share the IP with us OC forum readers? ;p
JeffnNetti
07-27-02, 08:07 AM
currently i am hosting MOH, SOF2 and rarely quake 3 depending on what everyone is wanting to play. we have a regular group of 12-18 playing on any given night and we vote every once in awhile....
i would consider running CS if i had more interest in it but so far none seems to want it.
i dont have a static IP (darn pacbell) on my 2.3mb/768kb ADSL so it changes when i restart the computer but generally its only restarted every few days. to get my current IP and game running you can check my ICQ away message, im at work and dont have my ICQ on this computer but its listed in my profile.
3 more weeks and ill have my new 6mb/2mb ADSL with a static IP woohoo hehe. i am praying that pacbell makes the install date for my new lines but im not betting on it :)
once i get the new line i might even try running 2 servers as ill have another XP 2000 up and running by then...
Hey jeff check this out, just what the doctor ordered.... http://www.no-ip.com/services/page/free/dynamicdns
or you could fold on it! www.overclockers.ws my o my folding is better than seti. it will make you smarter, stronger, and unusually attractive to the opposite sex. you cant afford not to fold!

please dont do that, i dont like it when people try to overtly steal our membership. theres nothing wrong with either seti or folding, i just prefer seti. so just fold and be happy, leave the SETIites alone.

1. i thought he was running nothing, i didnt not know he was already running SETI, as you did.
2. i did not insult f@h and make it seem inferior.
you were in the wrong and you know it, i have no hard feelings so lets just drop it and please dont do that anymore, it would make me happy.

I am married with children....4 of them to be exact. im doomed and i accept it lol (joke) i benchpress 315# on a good day so dont need more strength....ok ok so maybe i could use a lil more int but heck thats just no fun :)
seriously though i was splitting my computers between folding and seti but i got sick of all the problems i was having with the folding clients and EMIII. i asked for help a couple times but.... for me Seti has been more reliable and hassle free. as long as im helping out a good cause it works for me hehe.
just get a quad oc2100, you'll be set for sure.
