View Full Version : How to scrounge a heater core?
Assume for a moment that I'm too cheap to pay $16 for a heater core...
I assume there must be someplace where old cars go to die. How would I find this car graveyard, and does anyone have any experience looking for a heater core in one? (i.e. who would I talk to to get permission, what tools would I need to bring, and how would I find the heater core and determine if it would suit my purposes?)
Thanks...
My first thought would be that if you did find one it is probably corroding on the inside of the core or at the very least have a lot of crap inside it.

Look in the your local yellow pages for salvage yards, or call a local mechanics shop and they might know

Basically all you have to do is remove the dashboard, centre console, disconnect the whole wiring loom, dismantle the heater itself and 3 hrs of work later you will have your heater core.

A salvage yard is a better bet than an junk yard. Salvage yards being where cars go before meeting the crusher. You may need "contacts" to scrounge but you may be able to get something for free.
