Grr. I've been trying to get the text client to run on a Windows XP computer with the task scheduler. It's not working. This works perfectly in Win2k and even hides the client and runs at the login screen, but XP is a big POS IMO. Has anyone been able to run the client in XP by using the task scheduler?

sure have : here is what i did (both using 3.1 text-only)
open the Control Panel and open Scheduled Tasks. Then click on Add Scheduled Task.
then browse to the console
enter the admin username and passwrod
goto the advanced properties
click on the settings tab and uncheck Stop the task if it runs for 72 hours 0 minutes.
Click Apply and then OK. Then when you re-boot it will start FAH console and you won't see any Command Prompt window.
---------------------------
If that doens't work then try this
http://www.firedaemon.com/beta/
get it and use it. it works wonders on the machine that don't want to do it the normal way
install it to any folder/directory you like.
start menu --firedaemon folder -- "Service Manager.
Click "New"
Now fill out the fields with the appropriate information, and don't forget to put -service in the parameters field, otherwise you computer will not fold when logged out.
Now that you have filled it out go to the "Settings" tab. Make sure the "Auto-restart" checkbox is checked.
Last thing to note on this page is the Priority box- don't be quick to change this because it won't affect anything for the client. Remember the FAHcore_65.exe controls the priority on the it's own.
then click install and there you go
Hope one of these ways works for you:D

Looks like I'll have to try option #2. Maybe it's simply the fact that this computer I'm trying to hide the client on is an HP, and that alone makes it not work the way I want it too. Maybe Windoze XP can sense that I hate it and so it refuses to cooperate. Whatever the reason, task scheduling the client does not work at all.

Arkaine, I'm hiding the GUI client in task scheduler with windows XP pro and it's working just fine. It i set to rns "when system boots up" and I never see the F@H unless I check task manager. Maybe the GUI will hide for you as well.
Good Luck,

I've set it to run via the Task Scheduler too, and everything works fine under WinXP Pro. However, if I try to use auto logon, the command prompt will show up. Does anyone know why? I did exactly what NAS told me with the Task Scheduler setup, plus I:
1. Start -> Run, Typed "control userpasswords2".
2. Unchecked "User must enter a user name and password to use this computer."
3. Confirmed password for the administrator account.
4. Rebooted.
I no longer need to logon by typing in my password; however, the command prompt pops up. If I remove the password from the administrator account, the Task Scheduler wouldn't load F@H. Am I forced to type in my password everytime I logon for F@H to work with no command prompt?

have you tried using the using gui client as wedo said? this is what works in 98 as in 98 i always had the problem with the console appearing even if i log on.
as far as logging on, on my comp i have to for the service to work, maybe someone has figured out how to without logging on. If you absolutely can't then try firedaemon, it is quick to setup and see if the window pops up with that.

None of it worked for me. I just gave up and downloaded EMIII. I wasn't able to setup EMIII before, but this time, I really gave it a try. Now it works perfectly (and in stealth mode too). ;)

did it work when you manually logged in? i guess telling it that a password isn't required is what was messing it up.
glad you got em3 setup though:D

It worked if I manually log on. But I'm the only user of my PC and I'm at home, so I don't really need to password it. I don't run my PC 24/7, so it's a hassle to manually log on all the time.

Well I went over there a couple nights ago and now its working. It's the text client as I mentioned on a wimpy HP P3 500. Anyway, I'd tried both EM3 and task scheduler and did 2 restarts the first night I tried. No go. It wasn't showing in the task manager. I ran out of time that night and rushed to work, where I promptly started this thread in my frustration.
Well, now its working, client hidden running when logged in. Haven't tested to see if its running on just the login screen. But this comp is always logged in on the admin password anyway. Its running and its stealthed, so whether its EM3 or the task scheduler, I just don't care. As long as it folds unobtrusively for 32!

that is perfectly understanable if it isn't on all the time. just glad to hear it is up and running and out of the way. let us know if there is anything else.

I had that problem weeks ago when i added the xp boxes. I solved it by creating a copy of the admin account and made it run under that account. Did the usual steps and made a multi schedule task
1. startup
2. 7am
3. 7pm
4. after 5 min idle
This made it work. But it still is stupid XP behaves that bad
