i am considering getting a 80-->120 adapter for my HSF in the rig i will be building in a few days...

question (a dumb one albeit): will a 120 fan, more than likely at a lower dB than the 80mm fan i will also buy (delta screamer) perform as well as the 80mm?

i am thinking about getting a Sunon 120mm high speed (108cfm, 42dB) and an 80mm Delta (68cfm, 48.5dB), but which one would perform better?

to me the answer is obvious, but if this is the case, why do more people not simply buy fan adapters for their HSF's?

i just dont want to buy a delta if i dont need one, cuz i'm trying to save a little money on my computer

i'd put my money on the screamer. my 60mm 36cfm outdid my fandapted 80mm 50cfm.

It really is to bad that most fan adapters so abruptly change the size rather than taking a few inches.....4 or so and gently funnel the air. IF you make a fan adaptor like that you may be able to get better performance at the same or maybe a bit less high pitch. If you want all out really really good air cooling~compairable to 80cfm 80mm fan type you need to get 150ish cfm 120mm fan with those vanes for airflow stabilization. Delta has a 190 cfm 120mm fan with the vanes....monster fan but hey should be less high pitch right? heheh www.sidewindercomputers.com has it and is around 25 bucks. Not bad compaired to 80ish cfm fans for close to that price but you get more than double cfm. It also depends on the heatsink.......if you go above a certain cfm..... you wont gain nearly any impovement and some take a huge amount of air before they become that way. SLK-800 and i think also the Swiftech mcx462 type have alot more headroom than most.
