to buy my stuff.

after reading tons of reviews i've decided on a MSI GF4 Ti4400 for 235.oo from newegg (of course!)

which will go with an Abit BD7II, Chieftech Server Tower, 1.6a, 256mb mushkin pc3000, soundblaster audigy, dvd decoder card, dvd drive, burner, blah blah blah....
as soon as the bank gets my account up to date on monday (transferring funds on the weekend doesn't work too well :() i'll be buying up the mobo, vid card, and case. everything else is already bought.

comments?

Yep! Go for 512MB! RAMs are going to be more and more important! If you are planning to run WinXP you won´t be that happy only having 256MB!!

...looking forward to seeing your new avatar today! :D

Whats wrong with using 256m.b. instead of 512m.b. with XP. I'm running with PC2100 256m.b. with XP and everything runs fine.

nothing is wrong, its just better. from 256 to 512 on XP u will notice a difference, especially if u game. 512 and above, i doubt u will notice it at all, unless u run a server, or open up 10 programs at once.

my 12x toshiba and decoder card was the best purchase i've ever made. they stay until either they don't make pci slots or they don't make dvd's anymore. :)

why not? cause its another 70+ bucks for the 512 stick. 256 will do fine. if you check... alot of the top 3dmarkers only run 256mb.

and msi because the features are good, its a pretty well priced card for a ti4400, and the software included is not bad either.
the gainward ti4400 wasn't available, abit was way too expensive and the asus was the same.

nah. i guess its just a pic designed to make her look younger. it was probably taken a couple years ago when she was 18 though. its the only pic i have of her that makes her look that young.

yeah i've looked at the leadtek. i saw the thread about the leadtek in this forum and saw the post about how the massive heatsink actually ends up transferring heat TO the ram making ram overclocks not as successful. this makes sense. the bga memory doesn't really get hot enough to warrant having a heatsink like that.

the msi got some great reviews. in the 4400, 4600 shootout on anandtech it got the best of class award for the 4400's and the temps this card was running was easily 5-8 degrees cooler both stock and overclocked, which is something i really like. on the same review they were able to clock it on stock cooling to 310/640 which is plenty for me. plus its only 235.oo and it has vivo and the other goodies which are usually found on more expensive cards.

i have 512 on XP pro and i notice a difference on my friends comp with the same OS and only 256 mb. Its a small difference but noticable. Plus I like to have enough to easily have the whole kernel in memory instead of having a swap file.

With the price of ram these days 256MB makes a lot of sense. Also, as better quality ram avails you have less of an investment tied up in the old stuff come upgrade time. Unless your usage of the machine really benefits from 512MB (some tasks do, most do not), 256MB is the smart play. Besides, it gives you more fundage to get that Ti4400 instead of a 4200 :)

I have the Abit Ti4400, and it is nothing special. Although some reviewers claim 670-680MHz potential on the ram, for my example 650MHz is the outer limit. I bought it because it was the least expensive 4400 I had access to, and 650MHz is still a lot more than a 128MB 4200 will yield. I may yet send the Abit back and get the ASUS 4400, as I see those reaching 680-690 with regularity. The MSI is a plain vanilla reference design, but has demonstrated good overclocking in the reviews I have seen of it. If the pricing is favorable the MSI is a good choice, although the ASUS might be my pick if the price difference is small.

larva

thats what i was thinking about the money for the other 256... ti4200 becomes ti4400 :)

yeah its pretty much reference design, but the reason i like it is the features and the temps it runs at. the abit boards seem to run significantly hotter than the others. asus and gainward have the absolute top of the line right now, so either of those is a good choice if you have loads of money :)

I had a palit GF3-Ti200 that was sweet, ran 240/540 and cost next to nothing. Newegg has the same card.

http://65.119.30.151/productimage/14-260-007-02.JPG

I liked the card and it was very well made, looking ver much like the Acer motherboards do in terms of the black PCB finish and general build quality.

Strangely enough my Abit Ti4400 looks just like it ;)

http://www17.tomshardware.com/graphic/02q2/020522/images/abit1.jpg

And just like these this card as well... (Pine Tech Ti4400)

http://65.119.30.151/productimage/14-150-011-01.JPG

Having used Pine and Palit in the past, I know they don't make products this nice. The also have focused on low end, simple to manufacture cards, not high end stuff like GF4Ti's. It looks very much to me like Acer manufactures the Palit, Pine, and Abit branded video cards. I got my Abit for 3 dollars less than the Pine or Palit would have cost me, telling me it is inherently no more expensive.

Wait a second I've seen these sinks before :D These are on the back of the Abit 4400, same ones as the Palit Ti200 has...

One more pic, the other newegg 4400 offering that is somewhat attractive next to the MSI:

http://65.119.30.151/productimage/14-130-112-01.JPG

They have these babies (eVGA) for $210, 25 less than the MSI. I don't know off hand what the track record is for the memory overclock, but if it's good I'd be on it. My distributor sells the ASUS for the same price as the MSI, but I notice newegg doesn't have the ASUS or Gainward 4400.... Sometimes being a newegg slave can be a limit ;)

good luck,
larva

um... what does ram have to do with 3Dmark scores? Come on man u know as well as I, especially if u game that 512MB is the sweet spot. U will have less swap files from HD to RAM with that. Only thing that will help ur score for 3dmark, should be VC, CPU speed, FSB, and drivers. Correct me if im wrong, but i dont think RAM no matter how much more u have will change the score.:D

i didn't say it gives a better score :p
i mean that if they can run their machines with 256mb then i think i can get by with it for a while.

and frankly i don't feel like spending another 80 bucks for ram i might need.

I like it they all seem like good choices. The bundle of software that MSI throws in is really good. Hey 256 is good but 512 is better. The cool thing is you don't have to run 512 but its nice. Hey, everyone knows you're never done building a rig.

well i said last december that my current machine would last a year.... well... it lasted 8 months.

i know my new machine will last at least that long if not further seeing as how i can just pop a different processor in my motherboard(BD7II) and pick up a current maximum of 1ghz (2.53b) without changing anything else.

i like having my database to use for avatars. i don't think i can place a general reserve on all 1500+ pics, but i'd appreciate if you wouldn't use them here for your avatars since i change mine practically everyday.

yeah, to stray from the korean singer topic a bit...

512mb is nice for XP, but if you aren't going to be running XP then its nonessential, and you can get by with 256. I have 512, but only because when I bought it it was when ram prices hit bottom. Lol, I got two 256mb sticks of pc2100 that runs reliably at cas2, most aggressive settings, for about 45 bucks shipped. Those were the days, just months ago.......
