Hi All, I was hoping someone could help me. I think I have a problem with my Powersupply. I posted this in the 'Power supply' forum area, but no responses, So I will try here as well.

Quote of ME!:

OK, I have a problem and some of you may be able to help me.

Recently my system has been partially shutting it self off. The motherboard and everything attached to it (like fans) shuts down, but the fans that are not connected to the MB still run, and the drives' (both cd drivers and the floppy) LEDs come on and stay on.

If I shut down with the power button, and try to restart, it will not POST. BUT If I shut off the powersupply with it's own switch (or unplug it) and turn it back on, it will boot up fine, only to shut down after a random amount of time. So far I have not been able to stay on for more than 15min.

I stopped using it, till I work out the problem. All those unschedualled shutdowns can't be too good for my harddrive hehe.

Anyway, the reason I am posting here, is that someone I know said it could be the powersupply. Any thoughts on this? My first thought was I somehow screwed the motherboard or someother component. Also I have been having other strange problems lately. I will post below, read if interested.

Here is my system

Antec sx1040b case with the 400w psu that comes with it.
Abit kt7a-r
Athlon T-Bird 1.0GHz (usually running at 1.33, dropped it when problem started)
512mb RAM
GeForce2Ti
Maxtor 30gb 7200 HD
16x DVD
LiteOn 24x writer
SB Audigy
DLink Ethernet Card
Rest of devices are USB
Serial and Parallel ports are disabled.

Other Things:
-Right before the computer started screwing up like above, I had opened it up, removed the hsf and added arctic silver to it. I was grounded and was carefull putting the hsf back on (Doesn't require much pressure to get it on.)
-I had been using the Antec psu to test my neons/glowing fans on my other system that I am moding. I would plug them into my main computer, and turn it on.
-LiteOn stopped reading and writing, would just spit out discs. I took it in, and the techs said they had it working no problem. I got it home (A week later), and it worked. (Then new problem above started)
-Computer was having trouble recognizing the HD on the RAID controller. I started doing the full POST tests (Instead of the Quick POST) and I have not had the problem since.

hmm that sounds kinda weird...before we can fully ases(major typo) your problem...first some q's

What is the watage of your Powersupply
Have you added anything else besides the neon lights

Also download motherboard monitor 5 here (http://mbm.livewiredev.com) and set it up...then take a screen shot of the main screen(where it tells you voltages/temps/etc)

To take a screenshot press "print scrn" button and then open pain and click edit-->paste...then save it and post here for us so we can see what is up

Sorry I can't help you quite yet...and this should ahve been in case/powersupplies but it is ok since you are fairly new...we will still help you:D

umm, did you even read the entire post? I said I posted it in the power supply area. Hadn't had a response all day, so I posted here, where I spend more time. I also said my Powersupply was the Antec 400W <-- That W stands for Watage.

That sounds odd.
Just a quick ? when you applied the arctic silver did you avoid making contact with the L1 bridges???
The same thing happened to my friends computer but it doesnt happen suddenly and only the part about not being able to restart it was true.He ended up returning it and getting a working board.

Well you said it runs right but then shuts down? It doesn't sound like a psu problem it sounds like its shutting down because of heat. Or I had my epox go wacked out with the voltage and burned up but it was the mobo not the psu.

I am willing to bet that your voltages are all f'd up. I had an antec that roasted my one of my motherboards. Like spec said dl mbm5. Without voltage readings we can't be for sure.

Regardless, of where this post should have been, usually you have to wait for good answers :)

MBM5 Says this about my 400w psu:

Averages:
+3.3 = 3.50
+5.0 = 5.13
+12.0 = 12.25

And this about the 300w I put in to see if anything changed:
+3.3 = 3.50
+5.0 = 5.03
+12.0 = 12.13

Same for both:
-5 and -12 were both 0.
Core0 = 1.82
Core1 = 0.43

So I changed power supplies, and it didn't crash. I kept it on for a few hours. Then I changed back to the 'broken' one and it hasn't crashed yet either. I had it on for 4 hours, no problems. I'm stumped.

Thanks for all the input!

I was having the same issues, on the same motherboard from its first boot until recently. I'm still not sure as to why, but following some drive rearrangement, it started posting normally. If it happens again, I'd remove all components and reinstall, perhaps something is not connecting properly.

i had that problem before.
my system would just shut off periodically.
i just replaced my old PSU for a good enermax 350W PSU (i don't have *that* many devices) and it's never failed me ever again.

well after I switchout the power supply, then went back to the one that seemed to have a problem, It hasn't shut down again, yet. Still having a problem finding my HD on the RAID IDE if I do the quick POST, and I haven't tried buring any CDs yet, but so far it seems back to the way it was. Very strange.
