I am looking to upgrade from my Xp 1700+ AGKGA Y processor. Had it for awhile, and it always ran at around 50-60degrees C stable :P. Anyway, i want something that is good to OC the FSB. should i go with newegg.com Xp1600? or XP2100? I have about a 300 buck budget for this and a heatsink/fan. What do you think i could get the most out of per dollar? looking to buy at newegg.com tho, because they have the XFX GF4 Ti4200 128meg for 165 bucks(DVI+Tv out). :D:D

Does that mean you won't be unlocking it? If not, what FSB are you hoping to achieve? Do you have pc2700 ram? If not, can your pc2100 ram handle the high fsb's?
If you're looking to get 166 fsb without unlocking...
1600+ = 10.5x133 = 10.5x166 = 1743mhz (very possible)
2100+ = 13x133 = 13x166 = 2158mhz (not going to happen)
then again, the 2100 stock is going to be as fast as the 1600+ oc'd (with the exception of the faster bus, which makes quite a big difference).
If you get a good stepping for the 1600, you're looking at FSB's in the 175-180 range. since good 1600's (1.4ghz's) can reach 1.9ghz

Since you have the money to spend, get the XP2100+.
At 154fsb, you'll hit 2.0Ghz and you won't be putting too much strain on your other components.

correct me if i am wrong but wouldnt running your system in SPEC and at a HIGHER FSB be a more stable and faster computer???
I personaly would aim for a CPU capible of hitting 166FSB if you are not going to unlock it....
and if you can go faster.. that would be great as 170FSB will crush a 150 FSB computer

Wait... at 154FSB you won't be putting much strain on your other components? That's running at 38.5 PCI, that's quite the strain compared to 166 with a 1/5th divider putting the PCI back into spec at 33mhz.

I just feel that at 150fsb, stock vcore would be enough while you would need to crank up your vcore to at least 1.85v~1.90V to run at 170fsb or above. That would cause more heat and strain to the cpu. Correct me if I'm wrong.
I'm a newbie at running at high FSBs as I just replaced my crappy ecs k7s5a that would max out at only 150fsb.:)
So if I'm giving out the wrong advice, I apologize.

for the money you spend on a 2100 you buy a....
1600 and PC 2700 DDR and a good heatsink.
a 2100 is still very pricy IMHO

Well obviously higher mhz means more heat. But 9x150 and 7.5x180 would produce the same amount of heat from the cpu, just more heat from the ram and northbridge. The higher fsb would also produce a heck of a lot more performance as well.
But if you aren't unlocking the cpu, 13x150 at stock voltage with a 2100+ is laughable. Did you check the database? Only two people are running at the default voltage, and they aren't anywhere near the 2ghz mark. One guy at 2002mhz is probably doing 13x154 (like you suggested) with 2v. Course that's water cooled, and somebody who isn't going to be unlocking an xp probably isn't going to be using a water cooled setup.
NoobInside, get the 1600, you have a MUCH better chance at getting a higher FSB. It costs half the price of a 2100, and for that money you can do what Jay said. Get a very good Heatsink&Fan, and upgrade your memory to PC2700.

I might unlock it, but i still want high mhz clock speeds and high FSB speeds. I am using an Epox 8k3a+ right now and 512mb OCZ PC2700 ram. I'd probably get a Swiftech MCx462 or thermalright slk-800, but those are pretty pricey for HS/F. I'd like to get somethign similar to performance if possible, but cheaper.
