i think i will quote ploaf on this one:):
Folding is Folding@Home. It's a distributed computing project that exists to find out how proteins fold and misfold in the body. When a protein creates itself it does so by a process known as folding. Misfolding is what happens when something goes wrong during the folding process and is thought to be responsible for a number of diseases such as alzheimers. The project is creating models to find out what causes the misfolding of proteins by breaking down the folding process and recreating it so that it can be further analyzed. This requires awesome amounts of computing power which has, for the most part, been unavailable to researchers until now because most supercomputers simply aren't powerful enough to process the information. This is where we come in. Thousands of people, many grouped into teams like ours(go team 32), volunteer their PC's to help with the research. The information is broken down into small manageable pieces and distributed to the various PC's so that they can perform the necessary calculations and then send the information back to Stanford University where the results are then recombined. This way PC's connected to the internet can be used together to create a virtual supercomputer more powerful than what is available to most universities.
More information is available in the folding section of these forums and at http://folding.stanford.edu and there are a lot of people in the folding forum that would be glad to help you if you decide to join our effort. If you would like to try it out the client is available at http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html
now what seti is:
The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence
lots of info about that can be had in the SETI (http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=18) as there are many over there who could describe it in much better detail than I can;)
we invite you to ask all the questions you want as we will be more than happy to help:D

well thatnks for the info guys and you have caught my interset. I only have one question though. I have a celeron 900 mhz clocked to 990mhz with 256 megs of PC100 SDRAM . How much cpu power will I loose my doing this? and will it hurt my gameing?
I am very interseted though.

None, it uses your unused cycles

ok can you explain this for me. IF we have unused cycles then why dont we try to get them so we can have them in games. Im no tech person where this stuff goes so please explain.

The client only uses idle cycles so it is not possible for it to take them from other programs you have runnning. Personally, i play games all the time while folding and am yet to see any side effects from it or notice any slow downs.
so you can play all the games you want and you should be just fine. also this goes along with any other programs you may be using, not just guess. the client takes a back seat to currently running applications.

When you play games it uses as much power as it needs. When you are not intensivley gameing there are extra cycles. F@H uses extra cycles when it can but staying completley out of the way for other programs. If I confused you just tell me and I will try to explain differentley.

Let me give you an example. Let's pretend you want to play NHL 2002 and during intense play, it needs 100% of your CPU power. F@H will take 0% because your game gets 1st priority. Therefore, F@H will just sit in your PC and do nothing.
Now during slower plays, let's say NHL 2002 needs only 75% of your CPU power. In this case, F@H will take what's left over (that is, 25%) for its usage.
Now if all of a sudden your game needs 80%, F@H will release those 5% and give it back to your game.
Remember that F@H has the lowest priority of all programs, so it only picks up what's not used. So F@H doesn't affect your performance.
That blows my explnation out of the water.
ok sounds cool, sign me up. I dont get why everyone would not wanna do this.

let us know if you need anyhelp with the client configuration or anything else.
if you haven't gotten the client yet then you can get it from here (http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html) . I recommend the text only client (3.1) and here is a great set up guide for it(complete with pictures so give it a look): -=click=- (http://www.pickleloaf.com/exp/modules.php?op=modload&name=FAQ&file=index&myfaq=yes&id_cat=9&categories=Setting+up+the+Windows+Text+Client&parent_id=7)

i play cs, DoD, and TFC and i keep the client folding while playing it does not effect your gaming what so ever no lag because of it not problens what so ever
ok, i'll set it up soon. im burnig a cd right now.
thanks for all the help to understand guys. :p
Go here and download the console version of the client. http://folding.stanford.edu/download.html Put the download in a folder then open it up. It will ask you what your name is(or what you want your folding name to be) put what you want then hit enter. Then it will ask you for a team number put 32 here. Then it will ask you if you want it to ask you before it sends and fetches work. If you have a 24/7 connection put no if you have dialup put yes. Then it will ask you if you want to use a proxy Put yes if you are behind a firewall no if you arn't. If you are behind a fire wall it will ask you if you want to use IE proxy settings chose yes. Next it will ask you if you want to change advanced options chose yes. Then it will ask you what core type you want tipe in fah. Then core piroity chose idle. Then cpu usage % chose 100. Last chose 1 for machine ID. If the internet connection exists it will download a new protien then the core it needs. It then should start running. If you have more questions you can post them or PM me.
Dam NAS you beat me again.
ok well some of those options you posted were not there, but it did download stuff and is working right now. I could not find the core pirority option or the option to select the machine ID. Dosent matter though because it's working right now. I just noticed something these guys shout put in the software. I dont see an option to have this run when windows starts up. Weird.

glad to here it is working!!! and again glad to hear you are folding with us:D
if you do wish to get them though:
They are under the advanced options when you config it. if you wish to get to these again, close the client then go the start menu- then run and type the path where the client is and add the " -config" to it: (ie: c:\program files\folding\FAH3console.exe -config ) this will bring them up again.
you should get all of these:
User name: put the name you want to fold under here (anyname)
Team Number: 32
Ask before fetching/sending work: put "no" if you have a 24.7 connction and "yes" if you have dial up
Use proxy: no (unless you are at a college that has one or something of the sorts)
Change advanced options: yes
Core Type: fah
Core Priority: idle
CPU usage requested: 100
Machine ID: 1

oops! put "" around it and try it like "c:\program files\folding\FAH3console.exe" -config or whatever the path to your client is...
see if that works

oh after you config the client then you can run it from a shortcut. it only has to be config'd once. so if already have a shortcut you can run it from that. the config is just a one time thing.
after you have it configured you won't see the options any more unless you use the -config flag again.

cant i just right click the short cut and in the target add the -config to the end of the dir it already has?
Well it's running right now with out me setting those 2 options I could not find and what's important is that it's running.

yes you could but no need since the config is a one time thing and you don't want to run config everytime the client starts.

those stats haven't been updated for a little while do to some difficulties, check stanford's stats here (http://folding.stanford.edu/stats.html) and if you don't see yourself don't worry to much. it takes anywhere from 6 hrs to a day and a half for you to appear there.
oh yeah.. it is automatic :D

Welcome to the team Goodie.
I installed this Fold@Home lastnight and today I noticed that while it's running and im on web pages my comp freezes right up and I have to ctrl-alt-del and end task on what ever web page im on. If I dont do that my comp just sits there and is frozen :( It didnt do this before I started to fold so I thought maybe one of you guys could help me out. All I have running in the task bar is Zone Alarm, Norton antivirun auto protect, riva tuner and Fold@Home. My comp specs are in my sig, but I dont think my comp is all that slow to have this stuff all running. I havent had troubles Before. This makes no sense to me because When you fold the software is the last priority to be used, everything else comes first. Could this be because I could not figure out how to get those 2 options lastnight? I don't have all the ones listed that you guys say I should have.
