Ok, my friend and I are working on my first mod together. Today we started on the NIC LED mod, wanting to move the LED's to the front of the case. I was trying to desolder the LED's, and I could get the solder to melt, but I have a cheap soldering iron and don't have anything to suck or blow the melted solder away. Therefore, I couldn't ever melt all the solder before it would harden....out of frustration and seeing as there was no other alternative....my friend and i grabbed some needle nose pliars and basically pulled on the LED housing until it came off, leaving the soldered wires still in the PCB but snapped significantly shorter after we yanked the housing off. Question: Will my mod still work? Can I still solder the wire leads to the wires on the PCB? Things to watch out for? Or, should I try to go find some attachment for my soldering iron that would blow/suck the solder away? Please help, i don't want to f*** up this NIC more than I already have. And I already drilled the holes for the LED's up front.

I've never done this mod before, but I have to ask, why were you ripping the leds off the NIC? Just go buy some new leds and connect them in parallel... wouldn't that work better?

Would that work? I got the guide on how to do it from Virtual-Hideout and that guide said to desolder them. After I ripped off the LED's I asked my friend if we could've just soldered extra ones on there and leave the old ones too. But I figured that might mess up the voltage or something. If it's not fixable I might go get a new one for 10 bucks and try it? But please help if it's fixable!

Yes, I'm sure it is fixable. Just make sure you don't short anything out and you should be fine.

I had just reviewed the Blizzard 360 ULTRA Quiet Mark II and I noticed the case (not sure what it is.... saw the name somewhere but forgot) has 3 HD LEDs and a pwr one. I was like sweet you can use the 3 HD LEDs for the NIC mod.

BTW: I put a blu LED for power.

My 2 cents.

Here's a pict.... I have made a few more changes now since the pict is a bit old. Also, dig the sweet stealth mod.... both of my CD-Rom Drives.

yes in gainesville there is both cable and adsl... bellsouth runs the adsl, I ran it for about 18 months... but bellsouth is a constant pain in the ass... cox does the cable I havent tried them yet... but I may give them a shot this fall to power my apt and my friends next door... depends on how stupid they seem, and how much up front money they want...

yea my case has 3 HDD leds... so i just wired up the nic to a pair of pins (I cut them from some kind of IDE style pin set thing I found in my pile of assorted junk... ) then just plugged the led into the pins... works great... and my NIC is not teathered to the case... heh that seems like an good thing =P
