Well I had my system up and running for about 3 weeks. Everything was going well... last night I installed my Corb ( http://forum.oc-forums.com/vb/showthread.php?s=&postid=896247&t=1767#post896247 ) onto my gainward GF4 Ti4200. Then this morning I was running benchmarks (3dmark2001SE) then I set it to folding and left for work. While there my sister used my PC to get on Aim and to play on neopets... nothing big. Then when I got home this evening I go to run Warcraft 3 and I get a message that I have an unrecognized version of directX and I need to install 8.1... well I was confused, so i checked out 3dmark and sandra and both said that I was using directX version 0 or #.#... hmmm this does not bode well, so I went ahead and reinstalled DX8.1... nothing, so I removed all of my video drivers reinstalled DX8.1, reinstalled all my video drivers... still a no go. So now I just am like well ****... and I decide that I will go ahead and reformat... after all I have nothign on this PC yet but some basic programs. So I reformatted, installed the chipset drivers, then go to install DX8.1 and the gainward drivers (they were working fine before). during the nvidia driver install I get an access point not found error... so after this is all over with I go ahead and install the most recent 'official release' of the detanator drivers... no errors this time. But here is the trouble still I do not see DX8.1 I see just as before DX0... WTF... now I am confused... so I try reinstalling DX8.1 again... nothing, and that brings me up to current... I am going to try reseating the videocard and see how that goes... but other than that I am plum out of ideas. Anyone have any suggestions?

What OS are you running?? WinXP / Win98SE ???

I´m using XP and I´ve had the same problem - this DX0-thing! I decided to install DX9.0 beta - it works all fine now.... only problem is that it expires on Aug 20 !! - I found an DX9 Unistaller - I hope this will work then... if not - I´m afraid I have to reinstall WinXP !!

Did you try DX-Buster (http://www.directxbuster.de/index_e.html) already? - It should work for Win2k ... I can´t tell you if this app is good - some say so others not! If I was you I´d give it a try ...

no I have not... but I would think that reformatting the HD and doing a clean win 2k install would effictivly 'uninstall' directX from my system... all I can think of is that somehow the corb is causing problems... oh well I guess I will put the stock fan back on this evening when i get back home and see if that helps... Although I have no idea why that would be messing things up... what a pain.

well if anyone cares last night i reinstalled my stock HSF... reformatted and reinstalled DX8 and all my drivers and what not... now it works again... odd... the moral of the story... those 4 metal ringed holes that look very much like hsf mounting holes are in fact not... they are used for... well... something that has to do with DX8 functionality. also since it look slike I will be epoxying my hsf to the GPU I did decide to go for the cool jag 1U cooler =)

Sorry I didn't see your post earlier and im glad you got it working. Here is something I posted in another thread about Direct X and testing it.:

To check to see if your direct X is screwy, run dxdiag.exe then goto the display tab and run the DirectDraw and Direct3D test. If one of them fial then your direct X is messed up. Usually if you disable the DirectDraw and Direct3d close dxdiag.exe then run it again and enable them usually you will pass the test. This was a major fix for the rockstar game logo problem in GTA 3 and many people have used it to fix other games problems. Also the 2.9.4.2 drivers would always mess with my direct x and no game would work untill I I did these steps. If you continue to fail the tests, after the disable and enable then reinstall direct .

Hope this helps out in the future.
