Isnt a WU Take like 20 Hours? How does someone do 59.33 In a day?

{PMS}fishy
07-24-02, 07:38 PM
Nope they can take as few as 2:30 hours depending on the machine. A Xeon Prestona machine can do 4 WUs every 4 to 5 hours, with multithreading enabled.

DanFraser
07-24-02, 07:39 PM
coz of huge overclocking people can get 2 1/2 hour WUs, the faster the computer the better etc. And more WUs are done by having more computers ;)

Darn it! Beat me to it!

Zer0fight3r- Tell us what you're using that gets 20 hrs and maybe we'll get you more wu's.

Every extra wu gets the team closer to 3000 wu's a day.

Many machines... WU Depends on your CPU and components.

Ok....How does two Norseman get that many WU's...What kind of machines is he farming with??????

SkyHook

The Two Norsemen if I'm not mistaken is the team of Greg M and someone else he is friends or business associated with. Greg's SIG doesn't specify what machines he is running but I seem to remember that something was said that between the two of them they have access to a fairly large assortment of computers.

290 WUs in a day is an outstanding feat, one to be very proud of, but it certainly is an attainable level of production. Many of the "Heavy Hitters" (hallen, TC, The FourHorsemen, and many others) have on occasions turned in extremely respectable daily outputs

Gee thanks, guys.:o

Technically, we only had 283 today. I apologize for letting you all down.;) If I didn't have to leave work early, we may have made 290. We'll see if we can make 290 tomorrow.

My unnamed co-conspirator/co-worker/manager and I are doing server vendor evaluations. We have 6 new systems that are giving us a good bump right now. We have 2 4-way Xeon MP's at 1.6 GHz, 2 2-Way Xeon DP's (one at 2.2, one at 2.4) and 2 2-way PIII-S @ 1.4 GHz.

All times are approximations from memory (mine which doesn't have error correction until tomorrow when I get to the office):
The MP's will do 8 WU's at an average of 7:15 (hyperthreading enabled)
The DP's will do 4 WU's at an average of 6:10 (hyperthreading enabled)
The PIII's will do 2 WU's at an average of 4:45

those ultra fast machine could do it 3hrs or less. check ourbenchmark result (http://www.ocsetiteam.com/other/bench.htm).
also, u'll need more than one rig., a lot more!!! if u have 4 rigs, each do 'bout 4/day, then u'll have 'bout 16/day.

Harvey, i certainly hope not, and don't think so too. Horsemen will be back a month later, and i'll up another notch by then too. and who know who will be the next Norsemen?!

Crunch On!!!!

Nobody will be the "next Norsemen". Somebody may become the top cruncher, but "Norsemen"? Not.;)

You got that right.

Congratulations on Top Cruncher
Ranks:Top Crunchers

1.) 273.209 WUs – Benz4140 (03/16/02)
2.) 272.937 WUs – Benz4140 (04/06/02)
3.) 241.690 WUs – The Two Norsemen (07/21/02)

looks like this week Benz4140 is toast.

Thanks for the update on your cruchers. You're really giving them a great work out.

I see Lorixnt2 has sent 76 so far today. If you were "The Two Norsemen and One Italiano" you would break Benz4140's record.

Great week.

I hope someone buys a bunch more servers for testing. Don't forget to hold some bays for Hammers.:D

If a major manufacturer finally puts AMD in a box, we can assure you, we will do everything in our power to give them a run.

We made our purchasing decision Friday. I'm sure the loser will want their systems back ASAP. This means our production will drop off a chunk probably towards the end of next week.

Congratulations on reaching the big 15,000.

What we need to do is get somebody with an empty garage, and then we send out spare/old parts to them so they build a farm there, then they set the farm in the garage up to crunch under a group name. I am building my own SETI stack slowly, should be doing over 100WUs a week soon!

It looks like we spanked the 300 number today. It was fun to do at least once. Some of the hardware comes down tomorrow.

Team was 5 short of 3,000 wu's returned today.

My fault. I had 8 wu's I could have sent.

Anyway what a great run and what you have left is pretty heafty too,:)

Good luck. That will make a great screen shot.

Maybe next year Intel and AMD will make hitting 2,000 commonplace.

They aren't laying off engineers.

Hope you like the boxen you're keeping.

are you saying that your not running 24/7 on those boxes?

Greg M
07-30-02, 06:57 AM
24x7, but don't have all systems on the lab network full-time (that's where the queue servers are). Some human intervention is required on some systems. I enable the lab NIC and disable the prod NIC to download/upload WU's. I reverse the process to put the system back on the production network.

Hey Greg- 2,000 looking good so far. Hope they keep the outage to promised.

— July 29, 2002 — — July 29, 2002 —
OUTAGE NOTICE. There will be a 1.5 hour data server outage tomorrow in order to rebuild 2 indices on our user database. This outage will start at 17:00 UT.

edit: 2:49PM est. WU's going to Berkeley now.

All green. Go Go Go.

Too funny! 1994.

3 Servers are out of the lab. Our production will probably fall by around 45 per day.

That's still the team record for 7 days. Even Benz4140 never hit that number and we all know how yours are done.

Congratulations on a great week.

Top Seti 1000 User Overall is not that far if the lab keeps using Seti.

Were the boxes you kept the best at Seti too?

Harvey

edit- I just checked and 29472 is #1000's wu's. Not bad. TC is getting close to that too.

Greg M
07-30-02, 10:59 PM
They were samples of the types of servers we usually use. The vendor that didn't get selected wanted their systems back ASAP. Imagine that.:D

They were a 2-way PIII 1.4, a 2-way Xeon DP 2.4, and a 4-way Xeon MP 1.6.

I think top 1000 is safe for a little while.;)
