I would like to run this pump inline to avoid adding heat to the water in my reservoir, but i have heard that the pump isnt made to be run inline and that it could leak. I have heard of people modding these to run inline but i cannot find any guides on who to do this. Should i just cover the thing in silicone caulk? Is there a way to make it look good or would it be easiest to just run it in my reservoir? and what is the easiest way to add 1/2 barbs to the inlet and outlets of the pump?

check my www, then go to pummps and click the link for maxijet, im gonna make a real review for it, but it has a pic of mine, and no they dont leak there isnt any problems..

unless its not like a mj 900 or 1200, if it doesnt have an intake port it wont work

Many people are running the maxijets inline and i have not heard any cases of them leaking. I would suggest that you put some o-ring grease on the oring just to be safe.
I'll tell you what i did for barbs (i've posted this before):

The maxijets that can serve as powerheads come with a bunch of little plastic bits that can come in very handy. If you cut off 1/4" of the tube (that fits on the outlet) with the the air port, the 1/4" ring can than be cemented (i used a cement containing methylene chloride) on the end of the outlet and, in effect act as a barb to hold your tubing. Once it is cemented in place, round the end with some sandpaper. Similarly, you can add a barb (and extension) to the inlet by cutting off a 3/8" ring from the large, tapered inlet extension and cementing the ring to the inlet. In the end, your pump will have one barb on the inlet and one on the outlet.
5/8" tygon can be stretched over your new inlet (heat may be required). I used 1/2" tygon on the outlet however if you do this, it will only be tight where you have cemented your plastic ring. So, i also coated the outside of the outlet tube with silicone sealant before fitting the tube. I then let the sealant dry before fitting one plastic hose clamp around the thicker portion (the barb) and another around the thinner portion (over the silicone).

mine runs absolutely fine. You do not run them dry inline. I dont understand how you are "leaking" because the things should be contained in some watertight casing. They are quite nice and seriously, you cant beat them for the size, quality, performance and money. Maxi-jet is just the best.

(this is an inline, system here)
watertight box is at home depot. so are the barbs and the marine goop which is more than sufficient for even stiff/thick hoses that put lots of pressure on them (like mine). you can see a more complete view of the setup at http://signal-lost.homeip.net/stories/?num=19

You want to do that :

Top barb is not really necessary..depends of your diameter

:D

Where did you get the seal for the res?

It's a friend on a board who realize that, he has milled some traditional barb to fit into the Maxijet, all is waterproof without glue because of a good milling (tight adaptation) but it's more secure to stick them with epoxy for example..

the seal comes with the box.. but it's not really a resevoir.. The purpose of the container is to cool the pump and deafen any noise. You seriously can't hear it now unless you turn off the computer and put your ear up to the case.

hey rascal, you should see if you can get me some of those barbs milled! some in 1/2inch that would be really cool! :)
