View Full Version : General non-computer related discussion?
So we have a general computer related discussion, why not add a general non-computer related discussion? I think that would be a good addition.

Yes - i agree with that! We need either an "off-topic" or a "general non-computer related" forum! Since there are many threads in the "general computer related" which really donīt have to do anything with computers!

It used to be General Discussion. We changed it to help the spam level go down. WHich it has.
If you want to chat about stuff not computer related, try out a chat room or a social forums. :)
Coulden't you make the Non Computer Related Discussion NOT add to the post count? That would solve the spam and be fine with me. There are alot of things that I would want to post in it.
Overclockers.com is a computing forum. Therefore, discussion is generally about computers. General Computer Related Discussion is for the discussion of Computer related subjects that aren't covered by the other topics.
When GCRD was just GD, spam was rife. There was everything from car discussion to girl discussion and everything in between.
Now the rules have been tightened, spam is down and the mods/admins are a lot happier.
There are many places to discuss non-computer stuff, this isn't one of them. Feel free to PM/email members to arrange IRC/MSN/YIM/AIM chats, or use other forums, but we don't need a spam forum here.

Post count isn't the issue.
Using our service in a way that is contrary to what those paying for it want is.

Have you been to GCRD lately??? Those topics and many more are still there and I doubt that it will ever change...
I thought that GCRD was supposed to be the section to post that kind of stuff...if not, there is sure ALOT of it over there. Be happy that it is indeed over there, and not spread out over the entire forum...
It should be obvious by now to all of us that folks ARE gonna chat about ALL the interests in their lives, not just computers. Telling people to take it somewhere else is rude and inconsiderate, especially when you get one person saying it is OK and another saying it is not...Someone needs to make up their minds...
When GD was retitled GCRD it may have cut down on the amount of "Chat Posts" but it certainly did not eliminate them altogether...
Oh, and from what I have seen in the past year, the Mods and Seniors are just as guilty of "Chatting" as anyone else...This sets a very confusing precedent for mere members who are trying to stay within the limits, but can't figure out what the limits are...
We are all guilty of chatting a bit, some more than others...lets not all get into a snit over who is discussing what and where...
I thought this place was above the petty bickering...
i don't have a problem with the current arrangement.
and you can occasionally put an offtopic post in general computer related discussion... just don't make it a habit and the mods might not crack you with a whip http://members.directvinternet.com/maxvla/whip.gif

Yes, there are chatty threads. THey happen, and they're usually on a computer related subject. I'm the first to admit that I don't always go around talking about computer stuff on here. (What I do in real life not with standing). If a member steps over the line of what should be posted (as far as off topic goes) then we let them know and delete the post. There's no official reprimand of any kind.
There aren't as many anymore, though. We do allow some leeway in what is posted. The majority of what goes on in GCRD is computer related, though.
Comptuer related includes those things which are important in a computer geek's life.
And to say that it is rude and inconsiderate to take your posts about stuff that we don't want here is, if anything, completely backwards. It's rude and inconsiderate of YOU to suggest that we're somehow in the wrong with how we want to run the forums.

I have no problem with a post or two in a thread going off topic. It depends what the topic is. However, giving people a place for it will give a very strong ''you can chat all you like about non-computer stuff'' message.

Reminds me of something a Mod/Admin said once:
"This is Skip and Joes house, its their rules, because we are just guests in their house"
Or words to that effect.

Quick reply, Thelemac...
You have been and forever shall be in command of how the forum is run...no question there...
Many of the behaviors which are held in such disregard today are the same ones that have been wholeheartedly embraced by us ALL in the past...The old "Chat a thon" that used to be General Discussion was often LEAD by the leaders...recall the Longest Thread??? The Charge of the Light Brigade on that thread was very aptly led by the Mods and Seniors who now think nothing of telling us all that we can go somewhere else if we want to chat...To me that is rude and inconsiderate...Maybe I am wrong...
If everyone agreed on everything, what a boring world we would have, eh???
Don't take it so personal...;)

I second that...

One of the other issues that was brought up when the name was changed is liablity. The owners have a responsiblity for what is said on the forums. The name change is more of a reminder to keep things "civil". As long as it is kept reasonable there are many topics that are not "exactly" computer related that are allowed. If a topic becomes uncivilized then it must be dealt with. THERE HAVE BEEN LAWSUITS FILED FOR THINGS POSTED IN THE FORUMS!

I was no less in the wrong for that than anybody else.
That was also a giant stress relieving thread...and you'll notice that it isn't around any more.
When we changed there were people besides just the members that had the wrong attitude about some things. I admit to being one of them. Skip expressed his feelings on it, and now I relay those. I am, after all, nought but a mouthpiece for the wonder that is Skip. :D
I still don't really see how a change of policy is rude and inconsiderate. I also don't see how suggestions of where to go for aimless chat is rude or inconsiderate. You're welcome here, but the aimless chat isn't. Take the chat somewhere else, but don't be afraid to come here for some meaningful discussions about stuff important to computer geeks. ;)
This is the FIRST place I come for discussion of what is important to computer geeks, after all...who ya gonna call when the stuff gets too thick to deal with on your own??? This place is the best, and I hope to be forgiven if I get a little too "Chatty" on occasion, as we are naturally inclined to do...We are, after all, humans and if there is one thing we do love to do, its socialize and talk one subject after another to death...
Sorry if you thought I was rude...didn't mean to be...

The reason I first joined OC.Com was the quality of the information I received about computers, along with the lack of stupidity like constant flame attacks.
I stayed here long enough to get to know my way around a bit, and know the other members a bit- this increased the "social" aspects of the place, which made it better to me......
But it was getting to the point (my opinion) that the socializing was getting MORE time than computing, overclocking and dealing with stuff that really is related to the point:
getting the best stable performance out of computer hardware and software possible.
Not having any area in the forums dedicated to "chatting" or "socializing" has helped a lot I think.
I don't think ANYONE here will ever say that NO amount of joking, chatting or messing around will ever be allowed, but that stuff does take the focus off of the point:
getting the best stable performance out of computer hardware and software possible.
I think its a good thing the way it is now, personally. I have chat software and irc stuff for more pointless discussions:p
NOTE: Messaging and IRC is also good for helping other forum members out one on one if you happen to be online at the same time.
