This has been brought up many times before. My understanding of the issue is that in order to have an IRC channel clean like these forums, they would need basically a 24/7 moderator, which isn’t possible right now. I think there are OC channels out there, but completely unofficial ones, and the exact names cannot be discussed on the boards. I’m sure an Admin or Mod will post here in a minute with more information, so sit tight.

Check Forums Comments and Suggestions...there's a thread on the first page asking the same thing. Your questions should be asnwered there.

about the 24/7 moderator...first off...you can have ChanServ do basic moderation tasks..and also I run my own IRC channel right now, and my server runs scripts to automatically kick people for flodding, spamming ETC, even if im not there...but regardless, im basically on IRC ALL DAY LONG... I have nothing better to do..hehe

/me sits and waits for OC moderators to come talk to him

EDIT: you people post too fast, lol didnt see your post about forum suggestions..going to look at it right now

william (one of the mods) gave a great explanation about this:

Realtime chat has some major problems though. The mods and admins have looked at it before and two problems really stood out. The first was simply moderating a chat room. While the work load per mod and admin is much lower now than it was a month ago, we are still busy and have no where near the time to monitor the forums as well as a chat room.

The second problem was that a forum would detract from the forum community as a whole. Hardware questions start getting asked and answered in the chat room and all of a sudden, posting in the forums isn't necessary. There were several members that had an independent channel and I visited not too long after it was started. Hardware questions were already being asked there so they could get "quick" answers(although the forums are really quick as well....).

There are also some other midling things such as the replies and answers would not be able to be accessed by any other users other than those users in the chat room at the same time.

I just don't see a chat room as being feasible. I do see what they can offer that the forums can't, but I think in the end having a forum offers much more than a chat room would ever be able to offer.

here are some other threads about his

yeah youre right, after spending some time looking at these forums I agree...and now that i think about IRC...theres TONS of *******s in the popular channels, which is why i started my channel, its pure moderated, anyone can join, but unless i know you and have put your netmask in as a member you cant talk in the channel, so basically theres about 20 people...who i know, and like and dont do gay things like try to 'own' other people...wow i rambled a lot there...sorry...ill shut up now, but i guess youre right weve got great forums here...screw the IRC channel ;)

might wanna edit your post to not include the A**H**** altho you hear it alot these forums try to be a g rated as possible and with words like this ( even tho this words isnt the worst out there) makes it hard for the moderator to control the use of foul language in the forums. so for future refrences please refrain from using and language not suitable for a g rated audience.

thanks

I think the big deterrent here is amount of funding that would be taken away from the forums; think ads. I am sure there are plenty of people that could support the IRC channel, and we could go as far as posting popular IRC FAQ on the forums to re-direct people back to the site.

Feasible, yes; profit killer, yes.

just to point it out, there have been official channels for the different overclockers teams in the past but have since been more or less abandoned (officially) but some folks still hang out in them. you can find references in other threads.
