I have just brought a Maxtor 4D040H2 but instead of being recognised as being 40Gb I can only get it to partition and format at 16,31.98M. Not quite sure what I am doing wrong. Have tried setting the bios manually, leaving it to set automatically, but still no luck.

Please Help.

TIA

check the jumpers,

or

your hd could be messed up (return it)

or

if your comp is old the bios may not support a really big hd...
call up maxtor (i';m sure they have an 800 number) they'll definately be able to figure it out

more info is also neeed..
what OS
what are you using to format
what is the drive connected to (mobo, raid card)
and what kind is it

good luck!!

or slap it in another machine and use partion magic to format it. i had a problem like that running linux the drive would only read 16mb so i used partion magic and problem solved. or maybe FnP is right just take it back.

O.K. Here we go:-

Computer Details
MicrorATX Formfactor 5MMVP4 Mainboard (http://www.motherboard.cz/mb/luckystar/5MMVP4.htm)
AMD 500mhz
64mb
No OS (Yet) will put it on once formated (Win98) Using Win98 Startup disk to Fdisk and Format.

Jumpers are correct.

HD Details
Maxtor 4D040H2
Cylinders 16383
Heads 16
Sectors 63
LBA 80043264
Ultra ATA/100
5400RPM

Just wondering if the HD is not suitable for the Mainboard? Ultra ATA/100 - Utra DMA-33/66??

Thanks for all your help so far.

your mobo may not support a big HD... (its kinda on the old side)

a utility provided by maxtor will help the bios recognize the HD...(its caled ez bios i think)...look on the maxtor website...or go thru the crap that came with the HD

good luck!!
